Adverb Comparatives

Level 4

Adverb comparatives usually end in -e, -je or -ije.

How It Works

AdverbComparative
brzo (fast)brže
dobro (well)bolje
lijepo (nicely)ljepše
dugo (long)duže
rano (early)ranije
često (often)češće
mnogo (much)više
malo (little)manje

The form is often the same as the neuter singular of the adjective comparative, but some adverbs have their own form. The ending -ije is typical for longer adverbs, such as ranije and kasnije.

Add naj- to get the superlative: najbrže, najbolje.

A well-known saying uses bolje: Bolje ikad nego nikad.

The adverb form never changes for gender or number. So brže is the same whether a man, a woman or a group runs faster.

Common Mistakes

  • Using more with an adverb.

    Ona pjeva više lijepo.
    Ona pjeva ljepše.

The adverb takes its own comparative form.
