The Same with Той Самы

Той самы points to the very same person or thing: Гэта той самы чалавек. (That is the same man.) Такі самы means the same kind: У мяне такі самы тэлефон. (I have the same phone.)

How It Works

Той самы means the same one, not a different one. It joins the demonstrative той (see гэты and той) with самы. Такі самы means of the same kind: two identical things, not one thing.

  • Гэта той самы аўтобус. (This is the same bus, the one we took before.)
  • Гэта такі самы аўтобус. (This is the same kind of bus.)

Forms. Both words change together:

  • masculine: той самы, таго самага, таму самаму, тым самым
  • feminine: тая самая, той самай, accusative тую самую
  • neuter: тое самае
  • plural: тыя самыя, тых самых, тым самым, тымі самымі

Такі самы works the same way: такая самая, такое самае, такія самыя.

Useful patterns.

  • той самы, які / што ... (the same ... that): Гэта той самы чалавек, які ўчора тэлефанаваў. See relative які.
  • такі самы, як ... (the same as ...): такі самы, як у цябе. See comparing with як.
  • адзін і той самы (one and the same): адно і тое самае пытанне.
  • тое самае alone means the same thing: Мне тое самае, калі ласка. (The same for me, please.)

You will also hear той жа with the same meaning (the particle ж). Do not confuse this самы with the самы of superlatives: самы вялікі means the biggest (superlatives).

  6. Ён кожны дзень задае адно і тое самае пытанне.

    He asks one and the same question every day.

Common Mistakes

  • Changing only one of the two words.

    Мы жывём у той самым доме.
    Мы жывём у тым самым доме.

    Той and самы both agree with дом, so both go into the masculine locative: тым самым.

  • Using той самы for a phone of the same model.

    У мяне той самы тэлефон, што ў цябе.
    У мяне такі самы тэлефон, як у цябе.

    Той самы would mean the very same phone, one phone shared by two people. For two identical things, use такі самы, як.

  • Using the Russian feminine form та.

    Гэта та самая кніга.
    Гэта тая самая кніга.

    The Belarusian feminine form of той is тая, so the phrase is тая самая.
