най- / самы + Adjective
Superlatives with Най- and Самы
Say the most ... in two ways: най- + comparative (найлепшы, the best) or самы + adjective (самы вялікі горад, the biggest city).
How It Works
1. Най- + comparative. Take the one-word comparative and add най- at the front, written together:
- лепшы → найлепшы (the best)
- вышэйшы → найвышэйшы (the highest)
- цікавейшы → найцікавейшы (the most interesting)
- большы → найбольшы (the biggest)
2. Самы + plain adjective. Самы (stressed on the first syllable) agrees with the noun just like the adjective after it: самы вялікі горад, самая высокая гара, самае смачнае марожанае, самыя добрыя людзі. It works for any adjective that can be compared. You can also use найбольш + the plain adjective, mostly in writing.
3. Which one? Both are correct and mean the same. Самы is very common in speech; най- forms sound a little more compact and bookish. Самы goes with the plain adjective, not with a comparative in -ейшы: say самы цікавы or найцікавейшы. You will often hear самы лепшы in speech, but in careful writing use найлепшы.
4. Of all, in the city.
- Ён найвышэйшы з усіх. (He is the tallest of all.)
- Алесь самы высокі ў нашым класе. (Ales is the tallest in our class.)
- Гэта адна з найцікавейшых кніг. (This is one of the most interesting books.)
5. Do not use -ейшы alone to mean the most. A comparative with no comparison, such as прыгажэйшы горад for the most beautiful city, is not standard. Use the superlative instead: найпрыгажэйшы горад or самы прыгожы горад.
