The Emphatic Particle Ж and Жа
Гэта ж ясна! (That is obvious!) Ён жа казаў. (He did say so.) Use ж after a vowel and жа after a consonant.
How It Works
Which form? Use ж after a word ending in a vowel and жа after a word ending in a consonant, including й and ў: гэта ж, ідзі ж, чаму ж, мы ж, but ён жа, казаў жа, давай жа. The 2008 rules write both forms as separate words.
1. Reminding. Ж points to something the listener already knows: Ён жа казаў. (He did say so, remember.) Мы ж сябры! (We are friends, after all!)
2. Obvious things. Гэта ж ясна! (That is obvious!)
3. Questions and commands. In a question, ж shows impatience or surprise: Чаму ж ты не сказаў? (Why on earth did you not say so?) With a command, it urges: Ідзі ж! (Go on!) It also pairs with хіба: Хіба ж гэта праўда?
4. Sameness. After той, такі and similar words, ж means the same: на той жа вуліцы (on the same street), такі ж (the same kind). Compare той самы.
5. As a conjunction. In writing, ж can also mean and or but when it follows the first word of a clause: Я застаўся, ён жа пайшоў. (I stayed, but he left.)
Ж is not stressed and leans on the word before it. Another particle of emphasis is такі.
