Most adjectives end in -ы, but a few end in -і after a soft н: сіні (blue), апошні (last). They swap every hard vowel for its soft partner: сіняя, сіняе, сінія.

How It Works

1. Which adjectives are soft? Almost all of them end in -ні, and many describe colors, seasons, time or position:

  • сіні (blue)
  • летні (summer), зімні (winter)
  • апошні (last), сярэдні (middle, average)
  • сённяшні (today's), ранішні (morning)
  • хатні (home, homemade)

2. The endings of сіні.

  • Nominative: сіні, сіняя, сіняе, сінія
  • Genitive: сіняга (masculine and neuter), сіняй (feminine), сініх (plural)
  • Dative: сіняму, сіняй, сінім
  • Accusative: сіні or сіняга, сінюю, сіняе, сінія or сініх
  • Instrumental: сінім, сіняй (or сіняю), сінімі
  • Locative: сінім, сіняй, сініх

3. Always я, never е. Belarusian writes these unstressed endings with я: сіняе, летняе. The spelling сінее belongs to Russian. The vowel after the н always shows that the н is soft, just as ы and і show hard and soft consonants.

4. The ordinal трэці. Трэці (third) also takes soft endings: трэцяя кніга (the third book), трэцяга траўня (on May 3rd).

Common Mistakes

  • Using hard endings with a soft-stem adjective.

    Мне падабаецца сіная сукенка.
    Мне падабаецца сіняя сукенка.

Сіні has a soft н, so its feminine ending is -яя, not -ая.

  • Writing the Russian-style neuter ending -ее.

    Я бачу сіняе мора.

The Belarusian neuter ending of a soft adjective is -яе.

  • Using the hard accusative ending -ую.

    Прачытай апошную старонку.
    Прачытай апошнюю старонку.

After a soft н the feminine accusative ending is -юю.
