Learning with Вучыцца and Вывучаць

Level 2Sounds Like vučycca í vyvučacʹ

English uses one verb, learn or study. Belarusian splits it: вучыцца is being a student or learning to do something, and вывучаць is studying a subject: Я вывучаю беларускую мову.

How It Works

1. Вучыцца: being a student. Say where you study with у and the locative: Я вучуся ў школе (I study at school), Мая сястра вучыцца ва ўніверсітэце (My sister studies at university). Before ўніверсітэт the preposition becomes ва.

2. Вучыцца: learning a skill. Add an infinitive: Ён вучыцца чытаць (He is learning to read), Дзеці вучацца плаваць (The children are learning to swim).

3. Вывучаць: studying a subject. The subject is a direct object in the accusative: Я вывучаю беларускую мову, Мы вывучаем гісторыю Беларусі. Without an object, вывучаць sounds unfinished.

Forms. Вучыцца is a reflexive verb of the second conjugation: вучуся, вучышся, вучыцца, вучымся, вучыцеся, вучацца; past вучыўся, вучылася, вучыліся. Вывучаць is first conjugation: вывучаю, вывучаеш, вывучае, вывучаем, вывучаеце, вывучаюць.

Related verbs. Вучыць without -ся means to teach: Мама вучыць мяне гатаваць (Mom is teaching me to cook). The perfective вывучыць means to learn something fully, for example by heart: Я вывучыў верш (I learned the poem). You can also say вучыцца with a subject in the dative, as in вучыцца музыцы, but вывучаць + accusative is the everyday way to name a subject.

    Гісторыя → гісторыю, the direct object.

  6. Дзеці вучацца плаваць.

    The children are learning to swim.

    Вучацца is the яны form of вучыцца.

Common Mistakes

  • Giving вучыцца a direct object.

    Я вучуся беларускую мову.
    Я вывучаю беларускую мову.

    Вучыцца is reflexive, so it cannot take an accusative object. To name the subject you study, use вывучаць.

  • Using вывучаць to say where you are a student.

    Я вывучаю ва ўніверсітэце.
    Я вучуся ва ўніверсітэце.

    Вывучаць needs a subject as its object. To say where you study, use вучыцца with у and the locative.

  • Using вывучаць with an infinitive for a skill.

    Ён вывучае плаваць.
    Ён вучыцца плаваць.

    Learning to do something is вучыцца + infinitive. Вывучаць is only for a subject or a text.
