Both with Абодва and Абедзве

Use абодва with masculine and neuter nouns and абедзве with feminine ones: абодва браты (both brothers), абедзве сястры (both sisters). In other cases they change like два: абодвум братам (to both brothers).

How It Works

Choosing the form depends on the gender of the noun:

  • абодва with masculine and neuter nouns: абодва браты, абодва дамы, абодва вокны
  • абедзве with feminine nouns: абедзве сястры, абедзве рукі, абедзве вуліцы
  • абое for a man and a woman together: абое бацькі (both parents, mother and father)

The noun after them takes the same form as after два and дзве (two to four): абодва браты, not братоў.

Declension. In the other cases both words change, and the noun is plural in the same case (plural case endings):

  • genitive: абодвух, абедзвюх, абаіх
  • dative: абодвум, абедзвюм, абаім
  • instrumental: абодвума, абедзвюма, абаімі
  • locative: (у) абодвух, абедзвюх, абаіх

In the accusative, people take the genitive form (Я бачыў абодвух братоў) and things take the nominative (Я бачыў абодва дамы).

Common Mistakes

  • Using абодва with a feminine noun.

    Абодва сястры вучацца ва ўніверсітэце.
    Абедзве сястры вучацца ва ўніверсітэце.

    Сястра is feminine, so it needs абедзве.

  • Leaving абодва unchanged in the dative.

    Я напісаў абодва братам.
    Я напісаў абодвум братам.

    Абодва declines like два: the dative is абодвум.

  • Putting the noun in the genitive plural after абодва.

    Абодва братоў працуюць у Мінску.
    Абодва браты працуюць у Мінску.

    After абодва the noun has the same form as after два: браты.
