No ने in the Past

Level 2Sounds Like nē kē binā bhūtakāla

Awadhi has no ने in the past.

How It Works

In Hindi, a sentence like अमित ने किताब पढ़ी needs ने. In Awadhi, leave it out.

  • अमित किताब पढ़िस. (Amit read a book.)
  • हम खाना खाएन. (I ate.)
  • तुम का कहेव? (What did you say?)

The verb ending does the work that ने does in Hindi: -एन for हम, -एव for तुम, -इस for one other person and -इन for several. Pronouns do not change either. Say ऊ, never ओ ने or उन्होंने.

Learners who know Hindi often add ने out of habit. Watch for it in the past tense. It is one of the easiest ways to tell Awadhi from Hindi.

Examples (4)

  1. अमित किताब पढ़िस।

    Amit read a book.

अमित stays plain, with no ने.

  2. नेहा चीठी लिखिस।

    Neha wrote a letter.

The ending -इस shows the doer.

  3. हम खाना खाएन।

    I ate the food.

हम needs no ने; the verb ends in -एन.

  4. तुम का कहेव?

    What did you say?

तुम stays plain; the verb ends in -एव.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding the Hindi ने.

    अमित ने किताब पढ़िस।
    अमित किताब पढ़िस।
