का for Yes or No Questions

Yes or No Questions

Level 1Sounds Like kā (hām̐-nāhīṁ praśna)

You can ask a yes or no question by raising your voice or by adding का at the end.

How It Works

You do not need a special word order to ask a yes or no question. Take a statement and change it in one of two ways.

Written with ?, spoken with a rise at the end.
StatementQuestion

का at the end is a little more insistent. It sounds like really? or is that so?

Answer with हाँ for yes and नाहीं for no. You can also repeat the verb: चाय पियत हौ का?

Do not confuse this का with का meaning what. That का stays inside the sentence.

क्या is the Hindi word. In Awadhi, put का at the end, or just raise your voice.
