First, Second and Third
তৃতীয় ঘৰ means “the third home”, and দ্বিতীয় সুযোগ means “a second chance”.
How It Works
These words come from Sanskrit and are common in newspapers and school books.
| Number | Ordinal | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | প্ৰথম “first” | প্ৰথম সন্তান “first child” |
The ordinal comes first, and the noun keeps its plain shape. Add -টো or -জন at the end when you mean one particular thing or person: চতুৰ্থ পৰীক্ষাটো “the fourth test”. An ordinal can also stand alone with that ending: প্ৰথমটো “the first one”, তৃতীয়জন “the third person”. The plain numbers count with a counting word instead: এটা ঘৰ “one house”.
Dates and historical names use these words too, as in দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ “the Second World War”.
Examples (5)

দ্বিতীয় stands before সুযোগ “chance”.

Jonali has passed the fourth test.
চতুৰ্থ “fourth” works like the first three.
