Father: দেউতা, দেউতাৰা, দেউতাক

Level 2Sounds Like dē'utāraā / dē'utāka

“Father” is মোৰ দেউতা, তোমাৰ দেউতাৰা and আপোনাৰ দেউতাক; “mother” is মোৰ মা, তোমাৰ মাৰা and আপোনাৰ মাক.

How It Works

The word for the family member changes with the word before it.

WhoseFatherMother
মোৰ “my”দেউতামা
তোমাৰ “your”, to a friendদেউতাৰামাৰা
আপোনাৰ “your”, to a person you respectদেউতাকমাক
তেওঁৰ, তাইৰ, মৃদুলৰ “his”, “her”, “Mridul’s”দেউতাকমাক

So you say তোমাৰ মাৰা কেনে আছে? to a friend and আপোনাৰ মাক কেনে আছে? to an older person. Both mean “how is your mother?”.

The ending -ক on দেউতাক looks like the receiver ending, but here it only shows whose father it is.

When the father owns something, দেউতা takes the plain “of” ending -ৰ, not -ৰা, as in মোৰ দেউতাৰ গাড়ী “my father’s car”.

Pick the ending by whose relative it is. For the relative of a friend you call তুমি, use -ৰা. For the relative of a person you call আপুনি, or of someone you talk about, use -ক. For your own family, with মোৰ or আমাৰ, use the plain word. Another topic shows the same idea for brothers and sisters.

    With তোমাৰ to a friend, দেউতা becomes দেউতাৰা.

    Your father is tall.

With আপোনাৰ, for someone you respect, it becomes দেউতাক.

    How is your mother?

    মা becomes মাৰা with তোমাৰ.

With তেওঁৰ, the word ends in -ক.
