লাহে-লাহে

Saying a Word Twice: Slowly and Often

Level 4Sounds Like lāhē-lāhē

লাহে-লাহে খাওক means “please eat slowly”.

How It Works

Doubling a word spreads its meaning over time, over places or over repeats.

Doubled wordMeans
লাহে-লাহেslowly, gently
বাৰে বাৰেagain and again
ঘৰে ঘৰেfrom house to house
দিনে দিনেday by day
ধীৰে ধীৰেslowly, gradually

Put the doubled word before the verb, as in লাহে-লাহে কৰক. Adding -চোন to the verb makes a polite request: লাহে-লাহে কৰকচোন “slowly, please”.

বাৰে, ঘৰে and দিনে are বাৰ “time”, ঘৰ “house” and দিন “day”, each with -ে. লাহে alone means “gently”, as in আৰু লাহে! “more gently!”. Writers join the two parts with a hyphen or leave a space between them; the space is the more common spelling in print.
