Do / Naddo

Yes and No in the Past: Do and Naddo

Level 2

For a question in the simple past, yes is do and no is naddo: Est ti i'r dref? Do. (Did you go to town? Yes.)

How It Works

Do and naddo

  • Est ti i'r dref? Do. Did you go to town? Yes.
  • Welaist ti'r gêm? Naddo. Did you see the game? No.
  • Wnaethoch chi fwynhau? Do, diolch. Did you enjoy it? Yes, thanks.
  • Gafodd hi'r swydd? Naddo. Did she get the job? No.

Adding more. People often add the full answer: Naddo, es i ddim. (No, I didn't go.)

Only for the simple past. Other tenses repeat the verb:

Perfect questions with wedi. In the South these usually repeat the verb: Wyt ti wedi bwyta? Ydw. In the North, do and naddo are used here too: Wyt ti wedi gorffen? Do. Both are correct.

Questions that start with a noun take ie / nage (South) or ia / naci (North) instead. See Yes and No to Focused Questions.

North. The South usually answers Ydw here.

Common Mistakes

  • Answering a simple past question with a present-tense answer.

    Est ti i'r dref? Ydw.
    Est ti i'r dref? Do.

Ydw answers a present-tense question. For the simple past, yes is always do.

  • Using do for the imperfect.

    Oedd hi'n braf? Do.
    Oedd hi'n braf? Oedd.

Oedd is the imperfect, not the simple past, so the answer repeats the verb: Oedd or Nac oedd.
