yr un

The Same, Each: Yr Un

Level 3

Yr un + noun = the same: yr un peth (the same thing). After a price, yr un = each: punt yr un (a pound each).

How It Works

The same.

  • yr un peth — the same thing
  • yr un amser — the same time
  • yr un ferch — the same girl (merch softens)
  • yr un fath — the same kind, alike (math softens)

The same as. Add â, which becomes ag before a vowel: Mae e'r un oed â fi (He's the same age as me; in the North, Mae o'r un oed â fi).

Each. After a price or amount, yr un means each: punt yr un (a pound each), Maen nhw'n costio dwy bunt yr un (They cost two pounds each).

The mutation. Like un with a feminine noun, yr un softens feminine singular nouns, except those starting with ll and rh: yr un ferch, but yr un llaw.

Handy phrases. Yr un fath: Maen nhw'n edrych yr un fath (They look the same). Yr un mor means just as: yr un mor dal (just as tall).

Don't confuse it with y llall (the other one).

Examples (6)

  1. Dyn ni'n byw yn yr un stryd.

We live in the same street.

Stryd is feminine, but s never mutates. South: dyn ni. In the North: Dan ni'n byw yn yr un stryd.

  2. Maen nhw'n costio dwy bunt yr un.

    They cost two pounds each.

After a price, yr un means each. Punt softens after dwy.

  3. Mae'r ddau frawd yn edrych yr un fath.

The two brothers look the same.

Math (kind) softens to fath after yr un.

  4. Dyn ni'r un oed.

    We're the same age.

No yn before yr un. South: dyn ni. In the North: Dan ni'r un oed.

  5. Welais i'r un ferch eto ddoe.

I saw the same girl again yesterday.

Merch is feminine, so it softens after yr un.

  6. Roedden ni yn yr un dosbarth yn yr ysgol.

We were in the same class at school.

Roedden ni is the full form, used in the North; the South says Ro'n ni yn yr un dosbarth yn yr ysgol. Everyday Northern speech also says oeddan ni.
