un, dau, tri ... deg
Numbers One to Ten
Count to ten: un, dau, tri, pedwar, pump, chwech, saith, wyth, naw, deg.
How It Works
- un — 1
- dau — 2
- tri — 3
- pedwar — 4
- pump — 5
- chwech — 6
- saith — 7
- wyth — 8
- naw — 9
- deg — 10
Before a noun: pump → pum and chwech → chwe: pum munud (five minutes), chwe diwrnod (six days). The others stay the same: tri llyfr, saith diwrnod, deg punt. The noun stays singular; see Nouns After Numbers Stay Singular.
On their own the full forms are used: counting, phone numbers and house numbers, as in rhif pump (number five).
Masculine and feminine. Two, three and four have feminine forms (dwy, tair, pedair) for feminine nouns, and dau and dwy soften the noun after them: dau gi, dwy gath. See dau and dwy + soft mutation and tri tair pedwar pedair.
Numbers can mutate too, like other words: am bump o'r gloch (at five o'clock). See faint o'r gloch.
For numbers above ten, see decimal numbers un deg un.
