mor + Adjective + â
As ... as: Mor ... Â
Mor + adjective means so: Mae hi mor oer! (It's so cold!). Mor ... â means as ... as: mor dal â fi (as tall as me).
How It Works
So ...! Use mor on its own for an exclamation:
- Mae hi mor oer! — It's so cold!
- Mae'r ffilm mor dda! — The film is so good!
As ... as. Add â before the thing you compare with:
- Mae e mor dal â'i dad. — He's as tall as his father. (South; in the North: Mae o mor dal â'i dad.)
- Mae hi mor dal â'i thad. — She's as tall as her father.
In these two, 'i meaning his softens tad to dad, but 'i meaning her changes it to thad. See short possessives.
The mutations.
- Mor softens the adjective: mawr → mor fawr, cyflym → mor gyflym, blinedig → mor flinedig.
- Ll and rh do not change: mor llawn (so full), mor rhad (so cheap).
- â causes aspirate mutation (mor hapus â phlentyn, as happy as a child) and becomes ag before a vowel: mor oer ag iâ (as cold as ice). Everyday speech often leaves out the aspirate change with ti: mor dal â ti.
No yn with mor. Compare Dw i'n dal (I'm tall) with Dw i mor dal â ti (I'm as tall as you).
Not as ... as. Make the bod verb negative: Dw i ddim mor gyflym â hi (I'm not as fast as her). A few common adjectives have one-word forms, such as cystal (as good as). To ask how, use pa mor: Pa mor bell ydy e? (North: Pa mor bell ydi o?)
