y + Future 'that' Clause
That-Clauses with Y: Y Bydd
Present and past that-clauses use bod. For "that ... will" and "that ... would", Welsh uses y + the future or conditional verb: Dw i'n siŵr y bydd hi'n braf.
How It Works
Three ways to say "that"
- Present and imperfect: bod — Dw i'n siŵr bod hi'n braf.
- Emphasis: mai / taw — Dw i'n siŵr mai heddiw mae'r parti.
- Future and conditional: y — Dw i'n siŵr y bydd hi'n braf.
Future of bod: Dw i'n gobeithio y bydd digon o fwyd. — I hope there'll be enough food.
Short future verbs: Dw i'n gobeithio y daw e. (I hope he'll come.) Dw i'n siŵr yr aiff popeth yn iawn. (I'm sure everything will go fine.) See af i, do i, ca i, gwna i.
Conditional: Dwedodd e y byddai fe'n hwyr. — He said he would be late. (North: y basai fo'n hwyr)
Negative: Mae'n debyg na fydd e yno. — He probably won't be there. Dw i'n siŵr na ddaw hi. — I'm sure she won't come.
Speech drops y. Gobeithio bydd hi'n braf! (Hopefully it'll be fine!) Falle bydd e'n hwyr. (Maybe he'll be late; South. The North says Ella bydd o'n hwyr.) The verb normally stays unmutated. Words such as efallai, gobeithio, wrth gwrs and mae'n siŵr are often followed by this pattern.
After other linking words. The same y + future follows fel y (so that) and rhag ofn (in case): rhag ofn y bydd hi'n bwrw glaw.

- Mae'n debyg na fydd e yno.

- Dwedodd hi y byddai hi'n ffonio heno.
She said she would phone tonight.
- Gobeithio bydd digon o le i bawb.
Hopefully there'll be enough room for everyone.
Everyday speech: y is dropped.

Yr before the vowel of aiff (eith in the North).
Common Mistakes
Using bod with a future verb.
Dw i'n siŵr bod bydd hi'n braf.Dw i'n siŵr y bydd hi'n braf.Bod is for present and imperfect clauses. Before a future verb, "that" is y, or nothing at all in speech.
Mutating the verb after y.
Dw i'n siŵr y fydd hi'n braf.Dw i'n siŵr y bydd hi'n braf. This y causes no mutation. Only the negative na changes the verb: na fydd.
