Time + yn ôl
Ago: Yn Ôl
Length of time + yn ôl = ... ago: wythnos yn ôl (a week ago), ddwy flynedd yn ôl (two years ago).
How It Works
Examples of time + yn ôl
- wythnos yn ôl a week ago (w does not change)
- fis yn ôl a month ago (mis)
- flwyddyn yn ôl a year ago (blwyddyn)
- ddwy flynedd yn ôl two years ago (dwy)
- dri diwrnod yn ôl three days ago (tri)
- ddeg munud yn ôl ten minutes ago (deg)
- amser maith yn ôl a long time ago
Why the soft mutation? A phrase that tells you when something happened works like an adverb, and such phrases often soften. See Soft Mutation in Time Phrases.
Numbers. After a number the noun stays singular (tri diwrnod), and years use the special form blynedd: dwy flynedd. See Nouns After Numbers Stay Singular and Years and Age After Numbers.
Ago or for? Ago goes with a finished past: Symudon ni yma ddwy flynedd yn ôl (We moved here two years ago). For something that is still going on, use ers: Dw i'n byw yma ers dwy flynedd (I've lived here for two years). See Since and For: Ers.
Other meanings of yn ôl. After a verb of movement it means back: dod yn ôl (come back). Before a noun it means according to: yn ôl Siân (according to Siân).

Common Mistakes
Putting yn ôl before the time.

Using yn ôl for something still going on.
Dw i'n byw yma dwy flynedd yn ôl.Dw i'n byw yma ers dwy flynedd.Yn ôl (ago) points to a finished moment in the past. For a situation that is still true, use ers (for, since).
