-gan sari
The More ...: -gan Sari
-gan sari means the more ... or as ... goes on: Vaqt oʻtgan sari, osonlashadi (As time goes by, it gets easier).
How It Works
1. Building it
verb + -gan + sari, written as two words: oʻtgan sari, oʻrgangan sari, ulgʻaygan sari. After k and q, -gan becomes -kan or -qan: chiqqan sari.
2. Step-by-step change
The main clause usually shows gradual change:
- -(i)b bormoq: Kun oʻtgan sari, havo sovib boryapti (With each passing day, it's getting colder)
- -lashmoq, ortmoq, koʻpaymoq: Vaqt oʻtgan sari, osonlashadi
- -roq or koʻproq: Uni yaxshiroq tanigan sari, koʻproq hurmat qila boshladim
3. Different subjects are fine
The two clauses can have different subjects: Poyezd tezlashgan sari, shahar chiroqlari uzoqlashib bordi (As the train sped up, the city lights faded into the distance).
4. Similar patterns
-gan sayin means the same. qancha ... -sa, shuncha makes the comparison more explicit: the more ..., the more ....
5. Not literary sari
After a plain noun, sari is a literary word for toward: uyi sari (toward his home). After a -gan form, it means as ... goes on.
