endi

Now, From Now on

Level 3

Endi means now in the sense of "things have changed": Endi ketaylik (Let's go now). With a negative it means not anymore: Endi chekmayman (I don't smoke anymore).

How It Works

Endi is a time word that always has a sense of change. Something was one way before, and now it is different.

Its main meanings.

  • Now, at this point: Endi ketaylik (Let's go now), with -(a)ylik. Endi hammasi tushunarli (Now everything is clear).
  • From now on: Endi har kuni yuguraman (From now on I will run every day).
  • Not anymore, with a negative verb (-ma-): Endi chekmayman (I don't smoke anymore), U endi bu yerda ishlamaydi (She doesn't work here anymore).
  • Then, so, in questions about the next step: Endi nima qilamiz? (So what do we do now?)

Endi vs hozir. Hozir means "right now" or "at present": Hozir ovqat qilyapman (I'm cooking right now). It simply describes the present. Endi adds the idea that things have changed. So Endi chekmayman clearly says "I have quit", while Hozir chekmayman just says that you don't smoke now.

Endi vs hali. Hali with a positive verb means "still": U hali ham shu yerda ishlaydi (He still works here). Endi with a negative means the opposite: not anymore.

Endigina. With -gina, endi means "only just": Men endigina keldim (I've only just arrived).

Examples (6)

  1. Kech boʻldi, endi ketaylik.

    It's late, let's go now.

Word by Word: Late became, now go-let's.

Endi: the situation has changed, so it is time.

  2. Men endi chekmayman.

    I don't smoke anymore.

Word by Word: I now smoke-not-I.

With a negative verb, endi means "not anymore".

  3. U endi bu yerda ishlamaydi.

    She doesn't work here anymore.

Word by Word: She now this place-at work-not.

She used to work here; that has changed.

  4. Endi hammasi tushunarli.

    Now everything is clear.

Word by Word: Now everything clear.

It was unclear before; now it is clear.

  5. Endi nima qilamiz?

So what do we do now?

Word by Word: Now what do-we?

Endi asks about the next step.

  6. Men endigina keldim.

    I've only just arrived.

    Word by Word: I now-just came-I.

    Endigina means "only just".

Common Mistakes

  • Writing endigina as two words.

    Men endi gina keldim.
    Men endigina keldim.

-gina is written joined to the word before it, so endi and -gina make one word: endigina (only just).

  • Using endi for "still".

U endi shu yerda ishlaydi. (meaning: he still works here)
U hali ham shu yerda ishlaydi.

Endi with a positive verb means "now" after a change, so it suggests he has just started. For "still", use hali ham.
