-gan boʻlsa

If Something Has Happened

Level 5

-gan boʻlsa means if ... has happened: Agar u kelgan boʻlsa, menga ayting (If he has come, let me know). Plain kelsa would mean if he comes.

How It Works

1. Building it
verb + -gan + boʻlsa + personal ending:

  • olgan boʻlsam (if I have received)
  • olgan boʻlsang (if you have received)
  • olgan boʻlsa (if he or she has received)
  • olgan boʻlsak (if we have received)
  • olgan boʻlsangiz (if you have received, polite)
  • olgan boʻlsalar (if they have received)

The negative is -magan boʻlsa: Agar hali ovqatlanmagan boʻlsangiz, bizga qoʻshiling (If you haven't eaten yet, join us).

2. -gan boʻlsa or plain -sa?

  • kelsa: if he comes (not yet happened)
  • kelgan boʻlsa: if he has come (maybe already happened)
  • kelayotgan boʻlsa: if he is on his way

3. Contrasting two facts
In writing, -gan boʻlsa can set up a contrast rather than a condition: Oʻtgan yili bu yerda 10 ta maktab qurilgan boʻlsa, bu yil 15 tasi qurildi (Ten schools were built here last year, while this year fifteen were built).

4. Other patterns with it

For a past condition that did not happen, see unreal conditions.

Examples (6)

  1. Agar u kelgan boʻlsa, menga ayting.

If he has come, let me know.

Word by Word: If he come-past being-if, me-to tell.

  2. Xatimni olgan boʻlsangiz, javob yozing.

If you have received my letter, please write back.

Word by Word: Letter-my-ACC received being-if-you, answer write.

  3. Agar hali ovqatlanmagan boʻlsangiz, bizga qoʻshiling.

If you haven't eaten yet, join us.

Word by Word: If still not-eaten being-if-you, us-to join.

  4. Kalitni yoʻqotgan boʻlsam, uyga kira olmayman.

If I've lost the key, I can't get into the house.

    Word by Word: Key-ACC lost being-if-I, house-to enter can't-I.

  5. U allaqachon ketgan boʻlsa, ertaga gaplashamiz.

If he has already left, we'll talk tomorrow.

Word by Word: He already left being-if, tomorrow we-will-talk.

  6. Oʻtgan yili bu yerda 10 ta maktab qurilgan boʻlsa, bu yil 15 tasi qurildi.

Ten schools were built here last year, while this year fifteen were built.

Word by Word: Passed year this place-in 10 piece school built being-if, this year 15 piece-its was-built.

In writing, -gan boʻlsa can contrast two facts instead of making a condition.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the personal ending on the -gan form.

    Xatimni olgansiz boʻlsa, javob yozing.
    Xatimni olgan boʻlsangiz, javob yozing.

The personal ending goes on boʻlsa, not on -gan: olgan boʻlsangiz.

  • Using plain -sa for something that may already have happened (meant: if he has already come, let me know).

    Agar u kelsa, menga ayting.
Agar u kelgan boʻlsa, menga ayting.

Kelsa means "if he comes" at some later time. To ask about an event that may already be done, use kelgan boʻlsa.
