Yaxshimisiz?

How Are You?

Level 1

Yaxshimisiz? = Are you well? The answer: Yaxshi, rahmat. (Fine, thanks.)

How It Works

How it is built: yaxshi + -mi + -siz → yaxshimisiz. yaxshi means good or well. -mi turns it into a yes-no question, and -siz means "you are". After a word like yaxshi, the -mi usually comes before the person ending. In everyday speech and writing you will also meet Yaxshisizmi?, with -mi at the end. Both are used, and Yaxshimisiz? is the usual greeting.

Polite or familiar. Use Yaxshimisiz? with adults, elders and people you do not know well. With a close friend or a child, use -san: Yaxshimisan?

Answering. The usual answer is Yaxshi, rahmat (Fine, thank you). You can then ask back with -chi: Oʻzingiz-chi? (And you?)

Other ways to ask.

  • Qalaysiz? (How are you?) is a little more casual. With a friend: Qalaysan?
  • Ishlaringiz yaxshimi? (Is your work going well?) and Oilangiz yaxshimi? (Is your family well?) ask about someone's life.

These questions usually come right after Assalomu alaykum, and people often ask several in a row. A short, friendly answer to each is enough.

Common Mistakes

  • Using -mi twice in one question.

    Yaxshimisizmi?
    Yaxshimisiz?

Put -mi on the word only once: yaxshimisiz or, in everyday speech, yaxshisizmi, but never in both places.

  • Mixing siz with the familiar ending -san.

    Siz yaxshimisan?
    Siz yaxshimisiz?

The ending must match the pronoun: siz goes with -siz, and sen goes with -san.
