-gim keladi

Feeling Like Doing Something

Level 2

Choy ichgim keladi means "I feel like drinking tea", literally "my wish to drink tea comes". Uxlagim keldi means "I'm sleepy now".

How It Works

Building it
The feeling "comes" to you, so kelmoq (to come) stays in the third person. The possessive ending shows whose feeling it is:

  • ich-gi-m keladi I feel like drinking
  • ich-gi-ng keladi you feel like drinking
  • ich-gi-si keladi he or she feels like drinking
  • ich-gi-miz keladi we feel like drinking
  • ich-gi-ngiz keladi you feel like drinking (polite)

After q the suffix becomes -qi, and after k it becomes -ki: chiq- → chiqqim keldi (I felt like going out). This is the same change as in G-Initial Endings After K and Q.

Which form of kelmoq?

  • keladi a general wish or a wish now: Choy ichgim keladi
  • keldi a feeling that has just come on and is still there: Uxlagim keldi (I'm sleepy now)
  • kelyapti right at this moment (Present Continuous -yap): Uyga borgim kelyapti (I really want to go home)
  • Negative: Bugun ishlagim kelmayapti (I don't feel like working today)

Feeling, wish or plan
-gim keladi describes a feeling or an urge, such as being sleepy or wanting to laugh or cry. For a general want, use To Want. For a decision or plan, use Intending To Do Something.

Not the same -gi
The -gi that makes adjectives from time words, as in kechagi (yesterday's), is a different suffix. See Time and Place Adjectives.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the personal ending on kelmoq.

    Choy ichgim kelaman.
    Choy ichgim keladi.

The person is shown by the possessive -m. Kelmoq always stays in the third person: keladi.

  • Keeping g after a verb that ends in q.

    Tashqariga chiqgim keldi.
    Tashqariga chiqqim keldi.

After q, the suffix -gi becomes -qi: chiqqim.
