xohlamoq
To Want
Xohlamoq means to want: Nima xohlaysiz? (What would you like?), Uyga borishni xohlayman (I want to go home).
How It Works
Wanting a thing
With a thing, xohlamoq works like any verb with an object. A general thing takes no ending, and a specific one takes -ni:
- Choy xohlaysizmi? Would you like some tea?
- Qaysi birini xohlaysiz? Which one would you like?
Wanting to do something
Turn the action into a verb noun with The Verb Noun -(i)sh and add -ni: Uyga borishni xohlayman (I want to go home), U shifokor boʻlishni xohlaydi (She wants to become a doctor).
Wanting someone else to do something
Put that person's possessive ending on the verb noun: Kelishingizni xohlayman (I want you to come). See For Someone To Do: -ishini.
Polite and useful forms
- Nima xohlaysiz? What would you like? (heard in shops and cafés)
- Xohlasangiz if you like (If: -sa): Xohlasangiz, birga boramiz
The verb is spelled with x: xohlamoq, and the noun is xohish (wish). The synonym istamoq is a little more formal.
Three ways to talk about wanting
- xohlamoq a general want: Uyga borishni xohlayman
- Intending To Do Something a plan or intention: Uyga bormoqchiman
- Feeling Like Doing Something a sudden feeling: Uyga borgim keldi
