Familiar Commands

Level 2

Take a verb, drop -moq, and you have a command for one person you call sen: kelmoq → Kel! (Come!), oʻtirmoq → Oʻtir! (Sit!).

How It Works

Every verb is listed with -moq. Take that ending off and the stem that is left is already a complete command:

  • kelmoq → Kel! (Come!)
  • bermoq → Ber! (Give!)
  • qaramoq → Qara! (Look!)
  • oʻqimoq → Oʻqi! (Read!)

No ending is added, and the stem does not change, whether it ends in a consonant or a vowel.

Who you say it to. This form matches the familiar pronoun sen. Use it with close friends, younger brothers and sisters, children and pets. Said to a stranger, a teacher or an older person, it sounds rude. For them, use the polite -(i)ng form: Keling, Oʻtiring.

Tone. The bare stem is direct. To sound warmer with a friend, add -gin (Kelgin) or the particle -chi (Qara-chi!). To speak to several people, use -inglar.

Saying don't. Add -ma to the stem: Kelma! (Don't come!). See -ma / -mang (buyruq inkori).

Examples (5)

  1. Kel, bu yerga oʻtir!

    Come and sit here!

Word by Word: Come, this place-to sit!

Two bare stems, kel and oʻtir, one after the other.

  2. Menga suv ber.

    Give me some water.

Word by Word: Me-to water give.

  3. Qara, qor yogʻyapti!

    Look, it's snowing!

Word by Word: Look, snow is-falling!

  4. Eshikni och, ukam.

    Open the door, little brother.

Word by Word: Door-ACC open, younger-brother-my.

Speaking to a younger brother, the familiar form is natural.

  5. Tezroq yur!

    Walk faster!

    Word by Word: Fast-er walk!

Common Mistakes

  • Using the dictionary form as a command.

    Kelmoq!
    Kel!

The -moq form only names the action, like to come. Remove -moq to get the command: kel.

  • Using the familiar command with a teacher (meant as a polite request).

    Domla, bu yerga oʻtir.
    Domla, bu yerga oʻtiring.

The bare stem is for people you call sen. With a teacher, a stranger or an older person, it sounds rude, so use the polite -ing form.
