axir

After All

Level 4

Axir, + reason = after all, but: Axir, u hali yosh. (After all, he's still young.) Axir, men aytdim-ku! (But I told you!)

How It Works

1. A reason you should accept
Axir introduces a reason as if it were obvious:

  • Uni kechiring. Axir, u hali yosh. (Forgive him. After all, he's still young.)
  • Axir, siz vaʼda bergansiz. (After all, you promised.)

2. A reminder or reproach
With But Surely: -ku at the end, it becomes a reproach: Axir, men aytdim-ku! (But I told you!)

3. Frustrated questions
In a question, axir shows impatience or disbelief: Axir, nega kechikding? (Why on earth were you late?)

4. Where it goes
Axir most often starts the sentence and takes a comma. It can also come last, which sounds more spoken: Siz vaʼda bergansiz, axir. It comments on the whole sentence, much like the words in Parenthetical Words.

5. Axir and chunki
Because gives the cause as new information. Axir points to a reason the listener already knows or should know:

  • Kela olmadim, chunki kasal edim. (I couldn't come because I was ill.)
  • Kela olmadim. Axir, kasal edim-ku! (I couldn't come. I was ill, remember!)

6. Not the same as oxir
The noun for the end of something is oxir: kinoning oxiri (the end of the film). Dictionaries also list an older adverb use of axir meaning finally. For a clear finally, nihoyat is the safest choice.

Examples (6)

  1. Uni kechiring. Axir, u hali yosh.

Forgive him. After all, he's still young.

  2. Axir, siz vaʼda bergansiz!

    But you promised!

Axir reminds the listener of a fact they cannot deny.

  3. Axir, men aytdim-ku!

    But I told you!

    Word by Word: after-all I I-said-ku

  4. Axir, nega kechikding?

Why on earth were you late?

In a question, axir adds impatience.

  5. Xafa boʻlma, axir, bu faqat oʻyin.

Don't be upset. After all, it's only a game.

  6. Kela olmadim. Axir, kasal edim-ku!

    I couldn't come. I was ill, remember!

Common Mistakes

  • Using axir as the noun for the end of something.

    Kinoning axirida yigʻladim.
    Kinoning oxirida yigʻladim.

The noun meaning the end is oxir: kinoning oxiri. Axir is a particle for insisting, not a place in time.
