How It Works

This linking و is written as a separate word. It often joins a familiar pair in formal or literary Urdu and is commonly represented by o in Roman writing.

Some pairs retain the separate meanings of both words. Others have a conventional meaning as a whole: آب و ہوا refers to climate or weather, beyond simply naming water and air.

Ordinary اور remains useful in everyday coordination. Do not replace every اور with و or read every و inside a word as this connector.

    This magazine includes both poetry and prose.

    The two literary forms are coordinated.

  2. اس علاقے کی آب و ہوا خشک ہے۔

    The climate of this region is dry.

    He tends the garden morning and evening.

    The paired times give the sentence a literary flavor.

  4. پرانی عمارت کا نام و نشان مٹ گیا۔

    Every trace of the old building disappeared.

    نام و نشان functions as a familiar paired expression.
