Inside and Outside a Place

Distinguish a place’s interior from the area beyond it.

How It Works

Use the noun’s oblique form where required: تھیلہ becomes تھیلے before کے اندر. A feminine reference noun still uses کے in this expression.

اندر and باہر can also stand alone when the reference place is already understood. The surrounding conversation supplies the place.

اندر overlaps with میں for many locations but draws attention to an interior or boundary. Their uses are not interchangeable in every abstract expression.

Examples (4)

  1. تھیلے کے اندر چابیاں ہیں۔

    There are keys inside the bag.

    The bag’s interior is explicit.

  2. کمرے کے باہر دو کرسیاں ہیں۔

    There are two chairs outside the room.

    کمرے is oblique before the compound postposition.

  3. دکان کے اندر روشنی ہے۔

    There is light inside the shop.

    Feminine دکان still takes کے اندر.

  4. براہ کرم باہر انتظار کیجیے۔

    Please wait outside.

    The reference place is understood, so باہر stands alone.
