це не + Noun

Negative Identification

Level 1Sounds Like ce ne + ímennik

To negate identity (e.g., 'This is not a book'), use the phrase це не followed by the noun. Unlike English, there is no verb 'to be' (is) used in this common present-tense construction.

How It Works

In Ukrainian, identifying what something is (or isn't) in the present tense usually involves a zero copula, meaning the verb 'to be' is omitted.

Key rules for this pattern:

  • Case: The noun following 'не' must be in the nominative case. Even though many negative sentences in Ukrainian trigger the genitive case, identity negation is a major exception.
  • Fixed 'Це': The word 'це' acts as a pointer ('this/that/it'). It does not change its ending to match the gender or number of the noun that follows.
  • Punctuation: While affirmative identification often uses a dash (Це — парк), the dash is removed when using 'не' (Це не парк).
  • Usage: Use this to correct a misunderstanding or classify an object. For example, if someone thinks a liquid is water, you say 'Це не вода' (This is not water).

Examples (5)

  1. Це не проблема.

    This is not a problem.

Word by Word: This not problem.

A very common phrase where 'проблема' remains in the nominative case.

  2. Це не мій кіт.

    This is not my cat.

Word by Word: This not my cat.

Shows that 'це' remains the same even when referring to a masculine noun like 'кіт'.

  3. Це не Олена, це її сестра.

This is not Olena; this is her sister.

Word by Word: This not Olena, this her sister.

Used here to clarify the identity of a person.

  4. Це не кава, це чай.

This is not coffee; this is tea.

Word by Word: This not coffee, this tea.

    A simple classification of objects.

  5. Це не мої ключі.

    These are not my keys.

Word by Word: This not my keys.

Note that 'це' is used for both singular and plural 'these/this'.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the noun in the genitive after 'не' in an identification.

    Different MeaningЦе не проблеми.
    Це не проблема.

'Це не проблеми' is correct only as a plural ('these are not problems'). For one thing, identity negation keeps the Nominative: 'Це не проблема'. The genitive-of-negation rule is for direct objects, not for identification.

  • Inserting the verb 'є' (is).

    Це не є музей.
    Це не музей.

While 'не є' exists in formal logic, it sounds unnatural and like a translation from English in everyday speech.

  • Changing 'це' to match the noun's gender.

    Ця не книжка.
    Це не книжка.

In this specific identification pattern, 'це' is a fixed particle and does not change to 'ця' or 'цей'.
