Adjective Plural Agreement

Ukrainian adjectives in the plural lose their gender distinctions. Whether the noun is masculine, feminine, or neuter, the adjective takes the ending -і in the nominative case.

How It Works

In Ukrainian, adjectives must agree with the nouns they modify. However, a unique feature of the plural is that gender distinctions are neutralized.

1. The Nominative Plural Ending
For almost all adjectives in the nominative plural, the ending is -і. This applies regardless of whether the noun was originally masculine, feminine, or neuter:

  • Masculine: новий стіл → нові столи (new tables)
  • Feminine: нова книга → нові книги (new books)
  • Neuter: нове вікно → нові вікна (new windows)

2. Stem Types and Spelling
While the ending is consistently -і, the stem type affects how it is written:

  • Hard stems: The most common type (e.g., гарний, добрий). The ending is -і.
  • Soft stems: Adjectives like синій (blue) or ранній (early) also take -і.
  • Mixed stems: Adjectives ending in hushing consonants (ж, ч, ш, щ) like свіжий or гарячий also take -і (e.g., свіжі).
  • Stems ending in -й (Jot stems): If the stem ends in -й (e.g., свій), the combination of the stem-final -й and the ending -і is written as -ї (e.g., свої).

3. Adjective-Specific Rules
In Ukrainian adjective declension, stems ending in velar consonants г, к, х always take -і in the plural (e.g., високий → високі). Note that this is a specific rule for adjectives; nouns with these consonants often take -и in the plural.

4. Case and Animacy
This 'universal -і' rule applies to the nominative case and the inanimate accusative. However, for animate nouns (people and animals), the adjective must take the genitive plural ending -их (e.g., старі друзі → старих друзів).

Examples (4)

  1. На столі лежать нові книжки.

New books are lying on the table.

Word by Word: On table lie new books.

The feminine noun 'книжки' (books) is plural, so the adjective 'новий' takes the plural ending '-і'.

  2. Ми бачимо високі дерева в парку.

We see tall trees in the park.

Word by Word: We see tall trees in park.

The neuter noun 'дерева' (trees) is plural, so 'високий' becomes 'високі'.

  3. У неї є гарні сині очі.

    She has beautiful blue eyes.

Word by Word: At her is beautiful blue eyes.

Both 'гарні' (hard stem) and 'сині' (soft stem) use the '-і' ending to agree with the plural 'очі'.

  4. Ці старі будинки дуже гарні.

These old buildings are very beautiful.

Word by Word: These old buildings very beautiful.

Here, 'старі' and 'гарні' agree with the masculine plural noun 'будинки'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the singular feminine adjective ending -а with a plural noun.

    гарна книги
    гарні книги

Learners often try to carry over the singular feminine '-а' or use noun endings. Adjectives in the plural always use '-і' regardless of the noun's gender.

  • Confusing the neuter singular '-е' with the plural '-і'.

    нове вікна
    нові вікна

Because some neuter plural nouns end in '-а' (like вікна), beginners sometimes use the singular adjective form. Remember: plural noun = plural adjective.

Learn This First

To learn plural adjective agreement, you first need to know how to form plural nouns, as adjectives must match the number of the noun they describe. It is also helpful to understand how adjectives change by gender in the singular to appreciate that in the plural, gender distinctions disappear in favor of a single ending. Finally, recognizing the letter 'і' is crucial for forming the plural ending correctly.
