bio

Again, Anymore: Bio

Level 2

Bio means again or more: Ka bio (Say it again). After a negative verb it means anymore: Mempɛ bio.

How It Works

1. Again
Put bio at the end of the clause:

  • Ka bio. (Say it again.)
  • Ka no bio. (Say it again.)
  • Mɛba bio. (I will come again.)

2. More
With a thing that can be added, bio means more: Ma me bi bio (Give me some more), Ma me nsuo bio (Give me more water).

3. Not anymore
After a negative verb, bio means anymore or no longer. The negative prefix does the work of not; bio adds the idea that something has stopped. See Negative Prefix N-.

  • Mempɛ bio. (I do not want it anymore.)
  • Ɔnte ha bio. (She does not live here anymore.)

4. Bio or san?
San goes before the verb and also means do again or go back. The two often appear together: San ka bio (Say it again).

5. Bio or nso?
Bio does not mean also. For me too, say Me nso. See Also, Too: nso. The fixed pair bio nso means moreover in speeches and writing.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out the negative when you mean anymore.

    Mepɛ bio.
    Mempɛ bio.

Mepɛ bio means I want more. For I do not want it anymore, the verb needs the negative prefix: mempɛ.

  • Putting bio before the verb.

    Bio ka.
    Ka bio.

Bio closes the clause. The word that goes before the verb is san: San ka bio.
