foforɔ
New, Another: Foforɔ
Foforɔ comes after the noun and means new or another: nwoma foforɔ (a new book, another book).
How It Works
1. After the noun
Like other describing words, foforɔ follows the noun (see Adjectives After the Noun):
- nwoma foforɔ (a new book, another book)
- fie foforɔ (a new house)
- adwuma foforɔ (a new job, another job)
2. New or another?
Twi uses one word for both ideas. Metɔɔ nwoma foforɔ can mean I bought a new book or I bought another book. The situation decides. If you need to stress brand new, the word mono (fresh, new) also exists.
3. Another one
With no noun, foforɔ stands for the thing itself: Ma me foforɔ (Give me another one).
4. Something else, someone else
After obi, biribi and baabi, foforɔ means else: obi foforɔ (someone else), biribi foforɔ (something else), baabi foforɔ (somewhere else).
5. In a longer noun phrase
Foforɔ comes before numbers and before no: nwoma foforɔ mmienu no (the two new books). See Order in the Noun Phrase.
6. Other people: afoforɔ
For people, the plural form afoforɔ means others or other people: nnipa afoforɔ (other people), and on its own Afoforɔ nso bɛba (Others will come too). See Plural Adjectives. Akuapem spells the word foforo and afoforo.
