nso (Also)

Also, Too: Nso

Level 2

Nso means also or too and comes after what it adds: Me nso (Me too).

How It Works

1. After the word it adds
English can say also me or me too. Twi always puts nso after the word:

  • Me nso. (Me too.)
  • Ɔno nso bɛba. (He will come too.)
  • Akosua nso (Akosua too, Akosua in turn)

Use the full pronoun before nso: me, wo, ɔno, yɛn, mo, wɔn. See Independent Pronouns.

2. Adding a whole fact
When nso adds a second quality or action, it can come at the end of the clause: Ama ho yɛ fɛ, na ɔbu adeɛ nso (Ama is beautiful, and she is respectful too).

3. And you?
A very common reply after a greeting is Na wo nso ɛ? (And you?). See How Are You?.

4. Not either
With a negative verb, nso means either or neither: Me nso mempɛ (I do not want it either). See Negative Prefix N-.

5. Nso can also mean but
Between two clauses, nso can mean but or yet, much like nanso: ɔdidi saa nso ɔnyɛ kɛseɛ (he eats so much, yet he does not grow big). The sentence tells you which meaning is intended.

6. Nso or bio?
Bio means again or more, not also. Say Me nso for me too, never Me bio.

Examples (6)

  1. Me nso.

    Me too.

    Word by Word: me also

  2. Ɔno nso bɛba.

    He will come too.

Word by Word: he also will-come

Nso follows the pronoun it adds to.

  3. Me ho yɛ, na wo nso ɛ?

    I am fine, and you?

Word by Word: my self is-good, and you also (question)

A common reply to Wo ho te sɛn? The final ɛ softens the question.

  4. Akwasi maa Akosua sika na Akosua nso maa Akwasi ntoma.

Akwasi gave Akosua money, and Akosua in turn gave Akwasi cloth.

Nso follows Akosua, the new subject, to show she did something too.

  5. Ama ho yɛ fɛ, na ɔbu adeɛ nso.

Ama is beautiful, and she is respectful too.

Word by Word: Ama self is beautiful, and she-respects things also

Here nso closes the second clause and adds a whole new quality.

  6. Me nso mempɛ.

I do not want it either.

Word by Word: me also I-not-want

With a negative verb, nso means either.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting nso before the word, the way English says also me.

    Nso me.
    Me nso.

Nso always follows the word it adds to.

  • Using bio for also.

    Me bio.
    Me nso.

Bio means again or more. For also or too, use nso.
