Whereas (Contrast with -ken)

Level 6

The contrastive -ken is an advanced tool used to juxtapose two different situations. While it is often translated as 'while,' in this context it functions like 'whereas' to highlight a difference between two subjects or conditions.

How It Works

In advanced Turkish, -ken serves as a 'converb of contrast.' It is used to link two clauses where the information in the first clause is contrasted with the second.

1. Morphological Rules:

  • Invariant Form: It is always -ken. You never change it to '-kan' regardless of the preceding vowels.
  • Buffer Consonant: If the word ends in a vowel, you must use the buffer letter -y- (e.g., öğrenciyken).
  • Attachment: For contrast, it most commonly attaches to the Aorist tense for general truths, or the Present Continuous for current states. It can also attach to the Future Tense (e.g., gidecekken) to express 'whereas [subject] was going to...'.

2. Nuance and Usage:
While ama (but) signals a general contradiction, -ken is used for parallel contrast. It is perfect for comparing habits, preferences, or changing conditions (e.g., 'Yesterday it was sunny, whereas today it is raining').

3. Word Order:
The clause ending in -ken usually comes first, setting the context for the contrast that follows in the main clause.

Examples (4)

  1. Ben çay severken o kahve tercih ediyor.

While I like tea, he prefers coffee.

Word by Word: I tea like-whereas he coffee preference is-doing.

Here, -ken is attached to the Aorist (sev-er) to contrast the general preferences of two different people.

  2. Dün hava güneşliyken bugün yağmur yağıyor.

Whereas the weather was sunny yesterday, it is raining today.

Word by Word: Yesterday weather sunny-while today rain is-falling.

This contrasts two different states of the weather over two different days. Note the buffer -y- in 'güneşliyken'.

  3. Sen evde dinlenirken biz burada çok çalışıyoruz.

While you are resting at home, we are working hard here.

Word by Word: You at-home rest-whereas we here much are-working.

This highlights a situational discrepancy between what the listener is doing versus what the speakers are doing.

  4. Bazı insanlar çok konuşurken bazıları sadece dinler.

Whereas some people talk a lot, others just listen.

Word by Word: Some people much talk-whereas some-of-them only listen.

A general observation contrasting two types of behavior using the Aorist tense.

Common Mistakes

  • Applying vowel harmony to the suffix.

    O çalışırkan ben uyuyorum.
    O çalışırken ben uyuyorum.

-ken is an enclitic and does not follow vowel harmony. It is always -ken, never -kan.

  • Forgetting the buffer letter -y- after a vowel.

    Hava kötüken dışarı çıkma.
    Hava kötüyken dışarı çıkma.

When attaching to a word ending in a vowel (like 'kötü'), you must use the buffer -y-.

Learn This First

To understand '-ken' as a contrastive marker (whereas), learners must first be familiar with its primary temporal function (while). Additionally, they need to understand how contrast is generally expressed in Turkish and how the suffix attaches to both verbs and nominal predicates.
