-(y)di (ad cümlesinde geçmiş)

Past of Sentences Without a Verb

Level 2

The -(y)di suffix is the past tense for nominal sentences. It translates to 'was' or 'were' and indicates a state you personally witnessed or know for a fact.

How It Works

The -(y)di suffix allows you to talk about the past when there is no main action verb. It attaches to nouns, adjectives, and even locative phrases.

1. Vowel Harmony:
The suffix changes based on the last vowel of the word:

  • a, ı → -dı (e.g., yaşlıydı)
  • e, i → -di (e.g., öğretmendi)
  • o, u → -du (e.g., yorgundu)
  • ö, ü → -dü (e.g., kötüydü)

2. Consonant Changes:
If the word ends in a voiceless consonant (f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, p), the 'd' becomes 't' due to consonant assimilation (e.g., çocuktu, gençti).

3. The Buffer -y- and the Word 'idi':
If the word ends in a vowel, you must insert a 'y' before the suffix (e.g., öğrenci-y-di). This suffix is a shortened form of the defective verb idi. In formal or older writing, you may see it written as a separate word: öğrenci idi. When written separately, it does not change for vowel harmony.

4. Personal Endings:
To indicate who you are talking about, you must add simple past person endings after the past suffix. These endings follow four-way vowel harmony:

  • Ben: -(y)dım / -(y)dim / -(y)dum / -(y)düm (hastaydım)
  • Sen: -(y)dın / -(y)din / -(y)dun / -(y)dün (hastaydın)
  • O: -(y)dı / -(y)di / -(y)du / -(y)dü (hastaydı)
  • Biz: -(y)dık / -(y)dik / -(y)duk / -(y)dük (hastaydık)
  • Siz: -(y)dınız / -(y)diniz / -(y)dunuz / -(y)dünüz (hastaydınız)
  • Onlar: -(y)dılar / -(y)diler or -lardı / -lerdi (hastaydılar or hastalardı). Note that the plural suffix can come before or after the past suffix.

5. Existence: 'Vardı' and 'Yoktu':
This suffix is also used with var and yok to mean 'there was' or 'there wasn't'. See vardı / yoktu for more details (e.g., Süt vardı - There was milk; Zaman yoktu - There wasn't time).

6. Negation:
To say something 'was not', use the word değil followed by the past suffix and person ending: Mutlu değildim (I was not happy).

7. Questions:
To ask a question, place the past suffix and personal endings on the question particle. Because the particle always ends in a vowel, you must use the buffer -y-: Öğrenci miydin? (Were you a student?)

8. Word Stress:
When using this suffix, the word stress typically falls on the syllable immediately before the suffix: has-TA-y-dım, öğ-ret-MEN-di.

Examples (6)

  1. Dün hava çok soğuktu.

The weather was very cold yesterday.

Word by Word: Yesterday weather very cold-was.

Here, 'soğuk' (cold) ends in 'k', so the suffix becomes '-tu' due to consonant assimilation.

  2. O zamanlar öğrenciydim.

I was a student in those times.

Word by Word: That times student-was-I.

'Öğrenci' ends in a vowel, so the buffer -y- is required before the past suffix.

  3. Anahtarlarım masadaydı.

My keys were on the table.

    Word by Word: Keys-my table-on-were.

The suffix attaches to the locative case to show a past location.

  4. Çok yorgunduk ama mutluyduk.

We were very tired but we were happy.

Word by Word: Very tired-were-we but happy-were-we.

Shows the use of the first-person plural ending '-k' after the past suffix.

  5. Yemek lezzetli miydi?

    Was the food delicious?

Word by Word: Food delicious [question]-was?

In questions, the past suffix attaches to the question particle.

  6. Yemek lezzetli değildi.

    The food was not delicious.

Word by Word: Food delicious not-was.

To negate a past state, the suffix attaches to değil.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting the buffer -y- after a vowel.

    Kedi bahçede-di.
    Kedi bahçedeydi.

When a noun or adjective ends in a vowel, you must use the buffer -y- before adding the past suffix.

  • Using 'oldu' instead of '-(y)di' for a static past state.

    Dün hava güzel oldu.
    Dün hava güzeldi.

'Dün hava güzel oldu' is correct Turkish, but it means 'the weather turned out nice.' To describe a state that simply existed, use the -(y)di suffix.
