That Is Why

Level 3

Use bu yüzden or bu nedenle to show that the second part of your sentence is the result of the first part. They function like 'therefore' or 'that's why' in English.

How It Works

In Turkish, when you want to explain the consequence of an action or state, you use bu yüzden, bu nedenle, or their common synonyms. These all function like 'therefore', 'that is why', or 'so'.

1. Linguistic Breakdown:
The phrase bu yüzden literally means 'from this face' or 'from this side'. It uses the noun yüz (face/side) followed by the ablative case suffix -den. While yüz means 'face', in this context it refers to 'reason' or 'account'.

2. Common Variations:

  • bu yüzden / o yüzden: O yüzden is extremely high-frequency in daily spoken Turkish and is often used interchangeably with bu yüzden.
  • bu nedenle / bu sebeple: These are slightly more formal. Neden is the Turkic word for reason, while sebep is of Arabic origin. Both are common in writing and news.
  • bundan dolayı: A common alternative that literally means 'because of this', using the -den dolayı construction.

3. Nuance and Blame:
It is important to note that while bu yüzden is neutral, the standalone word yüzünden (because of...) is almost always used for negative results or to assign blame (e.g., Trafik yüzünden geç kaldım - I was late because of traffic). If the result is positive, Turks prefer to use sayesinde (thanks to).

4. Word Order:
Unlike çünkü (because), which introduces the reason, these patterns introduce the result.
Structure: [Cause Sentence]. + Bu yüzden + [Result Sentence].
In writing, these phrases typically start a new sentence or follow a semicolon or comma to clearly separate the cause from the effect.

Examples (4)

  1. Çok yorgunum, bu yüzden partiye gelmeyeceğim.

I am very tired, that is why I won't come to the party.

    Word by Word: Very tired-I-am, this from-reason party-to come-not-will-I.

Here, 'bu yüzden' connects the cause (being tired) to the result (not going to the party).

  2. Hava çok soğuktu, bu nedenle ceketimi giydim.

The weather was very cold; therefore, I put on my jacket.

Word by Word: Weather very cold-was, this reason-with jacket-my-acc I-wore.

This uses the slightly more formal 'bu nedenle' to show a logical consequence.

  3. Sınavı kazandım, bu yüzden çok mutluyum!

I passed the exam, that's why I'm very happy!

    Word by Word: Exam-acc I-won, this from-reason very happy-I-am!

This shows that 'bu yüzden' is perfectly natural for positive outcomes, not just negative ones.

  4. Toplantı iptal edildi. Bu nedenle ofise gitmedim.

The meeting was canceled. For this reason, I didn't go to the office.

Word by Word: Meeting cancel was-done. This reason-with office-to go-not-past-I.

These connectors can also start a new sentence to refer back to the previous statement.

Common Mistakes

  • Reversing the logic (using it like 'because').

    Yemek yiyorum bu yüzden acıktım.
    Acıktım, bu yüzden yemek yiyorum.

In the incorrect example, the speaker says 'I am eating, that's why I got hungry.' You must put the cause first and the result after 'bu yüzden'.

  • Using both a causal suffix and 'bu yüzden' together.

Yağmur yağdığı için bu yüzden ıslandık.
    Yağmur yağdı, bu yüzden ıslandık.

Using both -diği için and 'bu yüzden' is redundant. Choose one or the other to express the cause.

  • Using 'yüzünden' for positive results.

    Senin yüzünden sınavı kazandım.
    Senin sayende sınavı kazandım.

The word 'yüzünden' (because of) carries a strong sense of blame or negative consequence. For positive results, use 'sayesinde' (thanks to).
