-den dolayı / yüzünden

Because of

Level 4

Turkish uses two main ways to say 'because of' with nouns: -den dolayı (neutral/formal) and yüzünden (negative/blame).

How It Works

These two patterns are essential for expressing causality in Turkish, but they carry different emotional weights.

1. -den dolayı (Neutral/Formal)
This is the standard way to state a reason without necessarily implying a positive or negative outcome. It is very common in formal writing and polite speech.

  • Structure for Nouns: [Noun] + -den/-dan + dolayı
  • Structure for Pronouns: [Ablative Pronoun] + dolayı (e.g., ondan dolayı)
  • Example: Trafikten dolayı... (Due to traffic...)

2. yüzünden (Negative/Blame)
This pattern literally means 'from the face of' and is used when something goes wrong. It implies that the cause is a fault or an obstacle.

3. Pronoun Usage with yüzünden
Because yüzünden is derived from a possessive construction, pronouns must take the genitive form and the word yüz must take the corresponding possessive suffix:

  • Benim yüzümden (Because of me)
  • Senin yüzünden (Because of you)
  • Onun yüzünden (Because of him/her)
  • Bizim yüzümüzden (Because of us)
  • Sizin yüzünüzden (Because of you all)
  • Onların yüzünden (Because of them)

Examples (5)

  1. Yoğun kardan dolayı okullar tatil edildi.

Schools were closed due to heavy snow.

Word by Word: Heavy snow-from due-to schools holiday were-made.

A neutral, factual statement using the ablative case with 'dolayı'.

  2. Senin dikkatsizliğin yüzünden kaza yaptık.

We had an accident because of your carelessness.

Word by Word: Your carelessness because-of accident we-did.

Using 'yüzünden' emphasizes that the carelessness was the fault/cause of the negative event.

  3. Bundan dolayı size çok teşekkür ederim.

I thank you very much because of this.

    Word by Word: This-from due-to to-you very thank I-do.

When using pronouns with 'dolayı', the pronoun must be in the ablative case (bundan, ondan).

  4. Benim yüzümden geç kaldık, özür dilerim.

We are late because of me, I apologize.

Word by Word: My face-from late we-stayed, apology I-wish.

Note how 'yüzünden' changes to 'yüzümden' to match the first-person pronoun 'benim'.

  5. Fırtına yüzünden vapur seferleri iptal oldu.

Ferry services were canceled because of the storm.

Word by Word: Storm because-of ferry trips cancel became.

Even with natural events, 'yüzünden' is used if the result is negative or disruptive.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the wrong case with 'dolayı'.

    Trafik dolayı geç kaldım.
    Trafikten dolayı geç kaldım.

'Dolayı' always requires the preceding noun to be in the ablative case (-den/-dan).

  • Using 'yüzünden' for positive outcomes.

    Senin yüzünden sınavı kazandım.
    Senin sayende sınavı kazandım.

'Yüzünden' implies blame. If you want to say 'thanks to you' for a positive result, use 'sayende' instead.

  • Forgetting possessive suffixes on 'yüzünden' with plural pronouns.

    Bizim yüzünden kaybettik.
    Bizim yüzümüzden kaybettik.

With personal pronouns, 'yüzünden' must take the correct possessive ending (yüzüm, yüzün, yüzümüz, etc.).
