-den (sebep ve malzeme)

Other Uses of -den

Level 2

While -den usually means 'from', it also explains why something happened (cause) or what something is made of (material).

How It Works

The ablative case suffix follows two-way vowel harmony (-den/-dan) and consonant assimilation (-ten/-tan).

1. Expressing Cause (Sebep)
In this context, the suffix identifies the source or reason for a state. It is very common with emotions or natural phenomena.

  • Korkudan (Out of fear)
  • Soğuktan (From the cold)

For more formal reasons, it is often paired with -den dolayı.

2. Expressing Material (Malzeme)
Turkish usually uses a bare noun as an adjective to describe material (e.g., altın yüzük - gold ring). However, using -den emphasizes the material itself, often answering the specific question 'What is this made out of?'.

This suffix is also used when a material undergoes a transformation to become something else (the 'made from' function).

  • Bu masa meşeden. (This table is [made] of oak.)
  • Üzümden sirke yapılır. (Vinegar is made from grapes.)

Examples (6)

  1. Gürültüden hiç uyuyamadım.

I couldn't sleep at all because of the noise.

Word by Word: From noise at all I could not sleep.

Here, 'gürültüden' explains the cause of the inability to sleep.

  2. Çocuk sevinçten zıplıyordu.

The child was jumping for joy.

Word by Word: Child from joy was jumping.

The suffix is used here to show that 'joy' is the internal cause of the action.

  3. Bu kolye saf altından.

This necklace is [made] of pure gold.

Word by Word: This necklace pure from gold.

Using 'altından' emphasizes the material the necklace consists of.

  4. Yollar kardan dolayı kapandı.

The roads closed because of the snow.

Word by Word: Roads from snow due to closed.

In this example, '-dan' is paired with 'dolayı' to clearly state the cause.

  5. Sütten peynir yapılır.

    Cheese is made from milk.

Word by Word: From milk cheese is made.

This shows the use of the ablative case for a material that undergoes a transformation into a new product.

  6. Mutluluktan ağladım.

    I cried from happiness.

Word by Word: From happiness I cried.

This shows that the suffix can be used for positive causes, not just negative ones.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting consonant hardening (assimilation).

    Kağıtdan uçak yaptım.
    Kağıttan uçak yaptım.

Because 'kağıt' ends in a voiceless consonant (t), the suffix must harden to '-tan'.

  • Using -den for every material description.

    Deriden çanta aldım.
    Deri çanta aldım.

When describing an object normally (a leather bag), use the bare noun 'deri'. Use 'deriden' only to emphasize the material or say 'The bag is made of leather'.

  • Confusing cause (-den) with instrument (-le).

    Kalemden yazdım.
    Kalemle yazdım.

Use '-le' (with) for tools/instruments. Use '-den' for the source or reason (e.g., getting sick 'from' the cold).
