kaç tane / ne kadar

How Many and How Much

Level 2

Turkish uses two distinct phrases to ask about quantity: kaç tane (how many) for things you can count, and ne kadar (how much) for mass nouns, prices, and measurements.

How It Works

In Turkish, asking 'how many' or 'how much' requires choosing the right interrogative based on the nature of the noun.

1. Kaç Tane (How Many)
This is used for countable items. While kaç alone means 'how many', adding tane (piece/item) is very common when referring to physical objects.
Note: Tane is not needed when asking about people; you can use kaç or kaç kişi instead.

2. Ne Kadar (How Much)
This is used for uncountable nouns (water, flour, time) and is the standard way to ask for a price. It can also mean 'to what extent' or 'how long'.

3. The Singular Rule
Unlike English, where we say 'How many apples?', Turkish requires the noun to stay in the singular form. Because the question word already implies a quantity, the plural suffix is not used.

  • Correct: Kaç tane elma?
  • Incorrect: Kaç tane elmalar?

Examples (5)

  1. Kaç tane yumurta lazım?

    How many eggs are needed?

Word by Word: How many piece egg necessary?

Yumurta (egg) is countable, so 'kaç tane' is used. Notice 'yumurta' is singular.

  2. Çayda ne kadar şeker var?

How much sugar is in the tea?

Word by Word: Tea-in how much sugar there-is?

Sugar is a mass noun (uncountable), so 'ne kadar' is the correct choice.

  3. Bu gömlek ne kadar?

    How much is this shirt?

Word by Word: This shirt how much?

'Ne kadar' is the standard, polite way to ask for the price of an item.

  4. Günde ne kadar su içiyorsun?

How much water do you drink a day?

Word by Word: Day-in how much water you-are-drinking?

Water is uncountable, and the noun 'su' remains singular.

  5. Kaç tane kitap okudun?

How many books did you read?

Word by Word: How many piece book you-read?

Books are physical, countable objects, so 'tane' is used for emphasis.

Common Mistakes

  • Pluralizing the noun after the quantifier.

    Kaç tane elmalar aldın?
    Kaç tane elma aldın?

In Turkish, nouns after numbers and after 'kaç' stay in the singular form.

  • Using 'tane' for people when it is not needed.

    Kaç tane öğrenci var?
    Kaç öğrenci var?

'Kaç tane' also works with people, but 'kaç öğrenci' or 'kaç kişi' (how many people) is more natural.
