bir

The Word Bir

Level 1

bir = 'one' or 'a/an'. It is a fixed word that never changes its spelling.

How It Works

The word bir is one of the most versatile words in Turkish. Here is how to use it correctly:

1. As a Numeral (One)
When you want to specify the quantity '1', you use bir. In this role, it usually comes directly before the noun and is stressed in speech. Note that nouns following bir must always be singular.
Example: Masada bir elma var. (There is one apple on the table.)

2. As an Indefinite Article (A/An)
Turkish uses bir for the indefinite article. In this role, it is usually unstressed. It is used less frequently than in English; for example, when stating a profession, you usually just say Öğretmenim rather than Bir öğretmenim.

3. Word Order with Adjectives
The position of bir changes the meaning:

  • Adjective + bir + Noun: The standard 'a/an' meaning.
Example: Güzel bir ev (A beautiful house).
  • bir + Adjective + Noun: Emphasizes the number 'one' or acts as an exclamation.
Example: Bir güzel ev (One beautiful house / What a beautiful house!).

4. Adverbial Use (Just/Only/Once)
In informal speech, bir can mean 'just', 'only', or 'once' to add emphasis to a request or action.
Example: Bir bak! (Just look! / Take a look!)

5. Related Words: 'birkaç'
To say 'a few', Turkish combines bir with kaç (how many) to form birkaç. Like bir, it is followed by a singular noun.
Example: Birkaç kitap aldım. (I bought a few books.)

6. Morphology and Harmony
The root word bir itself is invariant and does not change. However, it is not exempt from grammar rules; any suffixes added to it (like the ordinal number suffix) must follow four-way vowel harmony based on its 'i' vowel.
Example: birinci (first), biri (one of them).

Examples (4)

  1. Bu bir kalem.

    This is a pen.

Word by Word: This one pen.

A standard use of 'bir' as the indefinite article 'a'.

  2. Dün güzel bir film izledim.

I watched a beautiful movie yesterday.

Word by Word: Yesterday beautiful a movie I-watched.

Notice that 'bir' comes after the adjective 'güzel' but before the noun 'film'.

  3. Sepette sadece bir yumurta var.

There is only one egg in the basket.

Word by Word: In-the-basket only one egg there-is.

Here, 'bir' is used as a numeral to emphasize the quantity.

  4. Bir çay lütfen.

    A tea, please.

Word by Word: One tea please.

Commonly used when ordering items to mean 'one' or 'a'.

Common Mistakes

  • Placing 'bir' before the adjective for a simple 'a/an' meaning.

    bir yeni araba
    yeni bir araba

In Turkish, the indefinite article 'bir' usually sits between the adjective and the noun. Placing it before the adjective emphasizes the number 'one' or creates an exclamation.

  • Adding the accusative when you mean any book.

    Bir kitabı aldım.
    Bir kitap aldım.

To say you bought 'a book' (any book), use plain 'bir kitap'. Adding the accusative case as in 'bir kitabı' refers to a specific book that the speaker has in mind but hasn't identified to the listener yet. Both are correct, but they carry different meanings, so 'Bir kitabı aldım' is the wrong choice when you mean any book.

  • Using a plural noun after 'bir'.

    bir elmalar
    bir elma

Just like in English, 'bir' (a/one) must be followed by a singular noun. If you want to say 'some' or 'a few', use bazı or 'birkaç' instead.
