ชื่อ

To Be Named

Level 2

In ผมชื่อต้นครับ, ชื่อ means “be named” and directly links the person with the name. ชื่อ can also be the noun “name”; read the complete construction.

How It Works

1. State A Name
The dictionary gives ชื่อ both as the noun “name” and as “be named.” In ผมชื่อต้นครับ, ผม is followed directly by ชื่อ and the name ต้น. Use that complete pattern for the direct introduction in the practice card.

2. Ask A Name
คุณชื่ออะไรครับ asks for the listener’s name. อะไร fills the name position as a question word. The dog example uses the same naming verb with หมาตัวนี้ as the subject.

3. Identify The Kind Of Name
ชื่อจริง denotes a name used officially, such as in a register. ชื่อเล่น denotes a name used among relatives or close people. นามสกุล means surname. Those definitions do not measure how many people use two names or say which kind of name every introduction requests.

4. Compare An Invitation About Address
เรียกผมว่ากุ้งก็ได้ invites someone to call the speaker Kung. It differs from simply stating a name. Learn เรียก...ว่า as a whole construction, including who is being called and the name used.

5. Keep The Context
The examples include ครับ and a question ending นะ. Interpret those final words in the exchange; they do not prove that a name was forgotten or that every such question has one fixed tone. Other name statements, omitted referents, and copula constructions need their own complete context.

Examples (4)

  1. คุณชื่ออะไรครับ

What is your name? (Male speaker)

Word by Word: You | be named | what | [polite particle]

อะไร asks for the name in คุณชื่ออะไรครับ. The example also ends with ครับ.

  2. ผมชื่อต้นครับ

    My name is Ton.

Word by Word: I (male) | be named | Ton | [polite particle]

The subject ผม is followed directly by the verb ชื่อ and then the name.

  3. เขาชื่ออะไรนะ

    What was their name again?

Word by Word: He/She | be named | what | [softening particle]

The question ends with นะ. Its English line gives a recall reading; the surrounding exchange is needed to tell whether the speaker forgot or is checking a name.

  4. หมาตัวนี้ชื่อโบโบ้

    This dog is named Bobo.

Word by Word: Dog | [classifier] | this | be named | Bobo

ชื่อ is also used for naming animals or objects, following the pointing pattern.

Common Mistakes

  • Inserting a copula inside the direct naming pattern with ชื่อ.

    ผมเป็นชื่อสมชาย
    ผมชื่อสมชาย

For this direct introduction, choose ผมชื่อสมชาย, with the person followed by ชื่อ and the name. ผมเป็นชื่อสมชาย does not reproduce that pattern or introduce the speaker as requested. This task is not a ban on every separate sentence containing the noun “name” and a copula.

  • Confusing a name statement with an invitation about how to address someone.

    ชื่อผมว่ากุ้งก็ได้
    เรียกผมว่ากุ้งก็ได้

For the invitation “You can call me Kung,” choose เรียกผมว่ากุ้งก็ได้. เรียก...ว่า identifies the person being addressed by that name. The other string does not reproduce this invitation pattern. ชื่อ can state a name or nickname; that function differs from inviting a form of address.
