เสียก่อน presents an action as first or beforehand. The examples ask someone to shower, listen to the end, or finish homework first; the police example describes becoming aware in time.

How It Works

Read the whole instruction:

  • อาบน้ำเสียก่อนแล้วค่อยไปกินข้าว asks for showering before going to eat. แล้วค่อย expresses the subsequent step here; it does not say to move slowly.
  • ฟังให้จบเสียก่อน asks for listening to the end first. อย่าเพิ่งขัด adds the instruction not to interrupt yet.
  • ทำการบ้านให้เสร็จเสียก่อนถึงจะไปเล่นได้ presents finishing homework as the condition for permission to go play.
  • ตำรวจไหวตัวทันเสียก่อน states that the police became aware in time, beforehand. The clause does not identify criminals or describe an escape.

    Finish the homework first; only then may [you] go play.

    ให้เสร็จ explicitly asks for completion, and ถึงจะไปเล่นได้ makes that completion a condition for permission in this example. [You] is the selected implied addressee, not an overt pronoun.

  4. ตำรวจไหวตัวทันเสียก่อน

    The police became aware in time, beforehand.

    ไหวตัว is read as becoming aware or alert here, rather than physically moving the body. The past translation is a selected narrative reading; the clause does not state who posed a threat or what happened next.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the other order in the requested phrase-order task.

    เสียก่อนกินข้าว ล้างมือ
    กินข้าว ล้างมือเสียก่อน

    For this archived ordering task, reproduce กินข้าว ล้างมือเสียก่อน, with เสียก่อน attached after ล้างมือ, rather than เสียก่อนกินข้าว ล้างมือ. The two action phrases are preserved as the exercise shows them; this label does not establish a universal ban on every sentence beginning with these words.

  • Replacing ก่อนอื่น in the requested opening.

    เสียก่อน ผมอยากจะบอกว่า...
    ก่อนอื่น ผมอยากจะบอกว่า...

    The task asks for the introductory opening ก่อนอื่น ผมอยากจะบอกว่า... (First of all, I would like to say that...). Use that exact opening instead of เสียก่อน ผมอยากจะบอกว่า... for this exercise. This contrasts the displayed openings without a universal restriction on discourse contexts.
