Verb + ต่อ presents continuation in the displayed examples. Compare both ต่อ before an object and ต่อ after an object.

How It Works

1. Continuing an Activity
In the displayed eating, talking, reading, and working sentences, ต่อ presents the activity as continuing. A pause or immediate resumption is possible context, not a necessary fact supplied by ต่อ alone. NIU’s selected ต่อ entry distinguishes continuation from other meanings such as connecting; do not substitute one gloss in every expression.

2. Read the Full Phrase
Compare subject, verb, and object in complete examples. Here, เรามาคุยต่อเรื่องเมื่อวาน puts ต่อ before เรื่องเมื่อวาน, while อ่านหน้าห้าต่อ puts it after หน้าห้า. กินต่อเลยครับ and ทำงานต่อเถอะ have no expressed object after their activity verb. These examples do not support a rule that ต่อ must immediately follow every verb or always follow the entire object.

3. Time and Other Markers
Compare กำลัง describing an activity in progress at its reference time. ต่อ highlights continuation in these examples; neither marker requires that the reference time be the present moment. Read ต่อไป in its full context: NIU gives continuation of work after age sixty, so do not limit it to future-only meaning or derive an immediate-only versus future-only contrast.

4. The Requested Exercises
The first task requests กินข้าวต่อ, with ต่อ after กินข้าว. ต่อกินข้าว does not reproduce that continuation pattern; this is not a rule that every Thai aspect marker follows a verb. The second requests ผมกลับมาเรียนใหม่หลังจากสิบปี, explicitly expressing returning to study anew after ten years. ผมเรียนต่อหลังจากสิบปี can convey continuing or resuming study in an appropriate context; the elapsed time does not make it universally wrong.

    The translation selects encouragement to continue eating. No concern about the speaker’s presence, actual pause, zero delay, or guaranteed politeness is stated.

  2. เรามาคุยต่อเรื่องเมื่อวาน

    Let’s continue talking about yesterday’s matter.

    เรื่องเมื่อวาน supplies yesterday’s topic, and ต่อ precedes it. มา is read as part of the invitation; the sentence does not specify physical arrival or the length of a pause.

    Here ต่อ follows หน้าห้า in the displayed reading instruction. This example does not establish a classroom-frequency or universal object-order rule.

  4. ทำงานต่อเถอะ

    Keep working.

    Word by Word: work | continue | เถอะ [urging particle here]

    The sentence urges continued work with เถอะ. It has no expressed “we” and does not state that a break occurred. A shared “let’s” reading depends on context.

Common Mistakes

  • Not reproducing the requested กินข้าวต่อ order.

    กินข้าวต่อ

    This task requests กินข้าวต่อ with ต่อ after กินข้าว. ต่อกินข้าว does not reproduce that continuation pattern. Other uses of ต่อ and other aspect markers require their own complete contexts.

  • Not reproducing the requested explicit return-and-start-anew wording.

    ผมเรียนต่อหลังจากสิบปี
    ผมกลับมาเรียนใหม่หลังจากสิบปี

    The task requests ผมกลับมาเรียนใหม่หลังจากสิบปี, explicitly saying return to study anew after ten years. ผมเรียนต่อหลังจากสิบปี can express continuation or resumption in a suitable context; neither a ten-year gap nor study makes that form universally invalid.
