What a Negative Statement Denies
Ordinary negatives replace waa with ma; noun-focused negatives retain baa/ayaa or another appropriate focus frame.
How It Works
Compare Cali baa heesa ‘It is Cali who sings’ with Cali baa aan heesin ‘It is Cali who does not sing’. The focused subject has no repeated short subject pronoun. Affirmative reduced heesa becomes negative reduced heesin.
Object focus has a different affirmative pattern: Shaah baa aan cabbaa ‘It is tea that I drink’. Here aan means ‘I’, and the verb retains full agreement. In Shaah baa aanan cabbin, aanan combines subject and negation; cabbin is the shared reduced subjunctive.
Focused negatives can describe present or past situations. Context can give the tea example a ‘did not drink’ reading; it does not establish that another beverage was drunk.
Ordinary Cali ma heeso uses main-clause negation and the full present-negative subjunctive. Focused negative questions likewise use aan-based negation, as in Maxaa aadan cunin? ‘What do you not eat?’
