Reading Descriptions Inside Descriptions

Level 6

A school description can occur inside a pupil description.

How It Works

Find the outer head and its relative predicate, then inspect the noun phrases inside that predicate. Each relative follows its own subject and agreement rules and lacks an independent sentence particle.

In arday dhigta dugsi ku yaalla magaalada ‘a pupil who attends a school situated in the city’, dhigta describes the pupil, while ku yaalla magaalada describes the school. Each head supplies its local relative subject.

In warqadda uu qoray ninka dugsiga ka shaqeeyaa, the man phrase is the unfocused subject inside the outer relative. Its final inner-relative verb therefore takes subject-marked -aa. Local ka relates working to the school.

In the house example, outer ay refers to the teacher, while inner aad identifies the listener. Compare parallel arday fiican oo dhigta dugsiga, ‘a good pupil who attends the school’: both descriptions modify the pupil. Connector choice follows the phrase structure. Casual usage frequently omits final subject marking.

Examples (3)

  1. Waxaan arkay arday dhigta dugsi ku yaalla magaalada.

I saw a pupil who attends a school situated in the city.

The school relative is nested within the pupil relative.

  2. Akhri warqadda uu qoray ninka dugsiga ka shaqeeyaa.

Read the letter written by the man who works at the school.

The inner relative ends the outer relative's subject phrase and carries its final subject marking.

  3. Waxaan booqday guriga ay deggan tahay macallimadda aad taqaan.

I visited the house where the teacher you know lives.

The outer subject is the teacher; the inner subject is you. Taqaan is an attested full subjunctive variant.
