Verbs with Se

Level 2

Se occurs with reflexive and other verbs such as umivati se and smejati se.

How It Works

Se occurs with reflexive and other verbs such as umivati se and smejati se. It belongs to the unstressed clitic group and does not always translate as oneself.

In Umivam se, the subject acts on itself; in Ana se smeje, se is part of the verb's usual construction. Translating every occurrence as herself would distort the second sentence. In the past, keep se together with the auxiliary: Ana se je smejala.

Examples (3)

  1. Umivam se.

    I am washing myself.

  2. Ana se smeje.

    Ana is laughing.

  3. Učimo se slovensko.
