Verbal Nouns in -anje / -enje

Nouns Naming Activities

Level 6

Verbal nouns such as branje and učenje name activities and behave as neuter nouns.

How It Works

Verbal nouns such as branje and učenje name activities and behave as neuter nouns. Their complements need the construction required by the noun rather than automatically preserving a verb's accusative object.

Branje is a noun, so branje knjig means reading of books with a genitive complement. It can become a subject with singular agreement, as in Plavanje je zdravo. An infinitive names an action too, but it does not follow this noun declension pattern.

Examples (3)

  1. Branje knjig me veseli.

    Reading books makes me happy.

  2. Učenje slovenščine je zanimivo.

    Learning Slovenian is interesting.

  3. Plavanje je zdravo.

    Swimming is healthy.
