Fleeting A in Nouns

Level 2Sounds Like nepostoǰano a kod imenica

Непостојано а (fleeting a) is a stem vowel that appears in specific noun forms to prevent awkward consonant clusters and drops out in other forms. In masculine nouns, it appears in the nominative singular (and inanimate accusative singular) as well as the genitive plural, but drops out in inflected forms with vocalic endings. In feminine and neuter nouns ending in consonant clusters, it is often inserted before the genitive plural ending -а.

How It Works

To become confident with fleeting a in nouns, keep these rules and cascading sound changes in mind:

1. Singular Forms (Masculine Nouns and Feminine Consonant Stems):
In standard masculine nouns ending in a consonant, fleeting a breaks up what would otherwise be a consonant cluster at the end of the word in the nominative singular (e.g., момак, ловац, задатак, пројекат). Under animate and inanimate accusative rules, fleeting a is retained in the accusative singular of inanimate nouns because it matches the nominative singular (e.g., Видим ветар / нови задатак / нови пројекат). When an inflectional case ending starting with a vowel is attached (such as genitive singular -a or locative singular -u), fleeting a drops out because the cluster is followed by a vowel (момка, ловца, задатка, пројекта).

Fleeting a also appears in the singular of certain feminine consonant nouns of the i-declension ending in -о (historically -л), such as мисао (Gen. sg. мисли) and помисао (Gen. sg. помисли). Here, fleeting a is present in the nominative and accusative singular to break up the stem cluster (*misl-), but drops out in all other cases when case endings are added.

In the genitive plural with fleeting a, the vowel reappears to separate stem-final consonants in nouns with the short plural (e.g., момака, ловаца, задатака, пројеката). In addition, masculine loanwords that end in consonant clusters such as -ент or -ант in the nominative singular without fleeting a (e.g., студент, диригент, музичант) insert fleeting a specifically in the genitive plural to break up the cluster before -а (студената, диригената, музичаната). However, masculine nouns with the extended plural on -ови/-еви do not restore fleeting a (e.g., ветар → ветрови → ветрова, not *ветара).

2. Feminine and Neuter Stems:
For neuter nouns in -o/-e and many feminine nouns in -a whose stems end in consonant clusters, fleeting a is inserted between the final stem consonants before the genitive plural ending -а: оловка → оловака, писмо → писама, стакло → стакала. However, this insertion is not universal for feminine nouns: many cluster stems avoid fleeting a by taking the genitive plural ending -и instead (e.g., молба → молби, борба → борби, лопта → лопти, тајна → тајни), while some admit doublets (банака / банки).

Important Restrictions & Secondary Changes:
• Immune clusters: Feminine stems ending in sibilant + dental/affricate clusters (ст, зд, шт, жд, шћ, жђ) never insert fleeting a before genitive plural -а (e.g., башта → Gen. pl. ба̀шта̄, врста → Gen. pl. вр̀ста̄). In speech and accentual spelling, this form is distinguished from the nominative singular solely by length on the final -а̄.
• L-to-O alternation: Syllable-final л turns into о when fleeting a drops out or appears at the end of a syllable. In agent nouns ending in -лац, the л remains before fleeting a (Nom. sg. читалац, Gen. pl. читалаца) but shifts to о in oblique cases where a drops (Gen. sg. читаоца, Nom. pl. читаоци). Similarly, in посао (Gen. sg. посла) and мисао (Gen. sg. мисли), the base л resurfaces when a drops out.
• Voicing assimilation: Dropping a brings two consonants together, often triggering voicing changes (e.g., врабац → врапца, where voiced б becomes voiceless п before voiceless ц).
• Consonant loss: When dropping a creates clusters like тц or дц, dental simplification occurs (e.g., отац → *отца → оца; задатак → *задатци → задаци).
• Length in Genitive Plural: Fleeting a in the genitive plural is always long (e.g., девоја̄ка, мома̄ка).

Common Mistakes

  • Failing to drop fleeting 'a' in masculine oblique cases.

Видео сам једног паса у парку.
Видео сам једног пса у парку.

The vowel 'а' in 'пас' is fleeting. In the accusative singular of an animate masculine noun, it must drop out: 'пса', not '*паса'.

  • Over-deleting stable, non-fleeting stem 'a' vowels.

    Сви су похвалили храброг јунка.
    Сви су похвалили храброг јунака.

The 'а' in 'јунак' is a permanent stem vowel, not fleeting 'a'. It never drops out in declension.

  • Dropping fleeting 'a' but forgetting adjacent consonant changes.

Питао сам свог отца за савет.
Питао сам свог оца за савет.

When fleeting 'a' drops from 'отац', the resulting cluster 'тц' undergoes consonant simplification to single 'ц'.
