само + Word or Phrase
Saying Only
Use само right in front of any word or phrase to mean 'only', 'just', or 'merely'. It never changes its form.
How It Works
In Serbian, само is an uninflected restrictive particle (and adverb) meaning 'only', 'just', or 'merely'.
1. Placement and Scope
As a general guide for clarity, place само directly before the constituent you want to limit:
- Само Ана пије чај. = Only Ana drinks tea (nobody else).
- Ана пије само чај. = Ana drinks only tea (nothing else).
In spoken conversation, vocal stress can also shift the focus (e.g., Ана само пије ЧАЈ), but placing само directly before the targeted word is the most natural and unambiguous way to write.
2. Modifying Different Parts of Speech
- Nouns and Pronouns: само ми (only us), само вода (only water).
- Numbers and Quantities: само један минут (just one minute), само десет динара (only ten dinars).
- Prepositional Phrases: When restricting a simple noun or pronoun, put само before the preposition: само у Београду (only in Belgrade), само за тебе (only for you). When restricting a numeral or quantity, both word orders are fully natural and standard: you can place само before the preposition or inside it directly before the numeral (e.g., само за пет минута or за само пет минута = in just five minutes; само у три дана or у само три дана = in only three days).
- Verbs: Он само спава. (He only sleeps / does nothing else).
3. Synonyms and Correlative Constructions
- Synonym једино: You will often hear једино used with the exact same meaning ('solely', 'only'): једино он зна (only he knows). They are sometimes paired together for extra emphasis: само и једино (solely and exclusively).
- Correlative Pairing: In compound sentences, you will encounter the structure не само ... него и (or не само ... већ и), meaning 'not only ... but also': Он говори не само српски него и енглески. (He speaks not only Serbian but also English).
4. Important Distinctions
- само vs. тек: Use само for exclusivity or exact quantity. Use тек when indicating time delays or 'only just / not until': Стигао је тек јуче (He only arrived yesterday).
- само vs. the adjective сам / сама: The invariant particle само means 'only'. To describe being 'alone' or doing something by oneself, use the inflected forms сам, сама, само, сами (e.g., Живим сама = I live alone). Note also that the adjective сам can serve as an intensifier meaning 'the very'—in this role, it is not invariant, but fully inflects for gender, number, and case to match its noun (e.g., neuter accusative у само срце = into the very heart; masculine genitive до самог краја = until the very end; feminine locative на самој ивици = on the very edge).
Examples (4)
- Он пије само воду.
He drinks only water.
Word by Word: He drinks only water.
Here, 'само' directly precedes the direct object 'воду', specifying that water is the sole thing he drinks.
- Само студенти имају попуст.
Only students have a discount.
Word by Word: Only students have discount.
Placing 'само' before the subject 'студенти' restricts the discount strictly to that group.
- Чекам само пет минута.
I am waiting for just five minutes.
Word by Word: I-wait only five minutes.
'Само' precedes the number 'пет' to indicate a minimal duration.
- Овај поклон је само за тебе.
This gift is only for you.
Word by Word: This gift is only for you.
When modifying a prepositional phrase, 'само' must go before the preposition 'за', not after it.
Common Mistakes
Placing 'само' directly between a preposition and a simple noun or pronoun.
Идем у само Београд.Идем само у Београд.When restricting a simple noun or pronoun, 'само' must precede the preposition ('само у Београд', 'само за тебе'). However, note that 'само' can appear after a preposition when it modifies an internal quantity or number ('за само пет минута').
Using 'само' instead of an agreeing form of 'сам' to mean 'alone'.
Она живи само.Она живи сама.'Само' means 'only' or 'just'. To express that someone is alone, use the agreeing adjective/pronoun form: 'сам' (masculine), 'сама' (feminine), or 'сами' (plural).
Placing 'само' before the verb when you mean only the pizza.
Different MeaningЈа само једем пицу петком.Ја једем само пицу петком.'Ја само једем пицу петком' is correct, but 'само' can then read as 'all I do is eat' (and not, for example, cook). To limit the food, put 'само' right before it: 'Ја једем само пицу петком'.
