Consonant Changes Before I

Level 3Sounds Like dativ i lokativ sa sibilarizaciǰom

Sibilarization (сибиларизација) shifts stem-final velar consonants к, г, and х into sibilants ц, з, and с before the dative and locative singular ending -и in feminine nouns ending in -а (e.g., рука → руци, књига → књизи, сврха → сврси). Masculine nouns ending in -a and personal names regularly block this change (e.g., Лука → Луки, колега → колеги).

How It Works

In Serbian, nouns ending in -а (primarily feminine nouns) take the suffix -и in the dative and locative singular. When the stem ends in the velar consonants к, г, or х, a sound change known as sibilarization (сибиларизација) frequently shifts them to ц, з, and с.

1. Regular Native Alternations:
In high-frequency native feminine nouns, the shifts for к and г are standard and regular. In contrast, the shift х → с is largely unproductive in modern standard Serbian: it is obligatory in сврха → сврси, occurs as an alternative variant in a few words like снаха → снахи / снаси and the loanword епоха → епохи / епоси, but is otherwise blocked in native nouns ending in -ха (such as утеха → утехи and стреха → стрехи):
• к → ц: рука (hand/arm) → руци, слика (picture) → слици, река (river) → реци
• г → з: књига (book) → књизи, нога (leg/foot) → нози
• х → с: сврха (purpose) → сврси, снаха (daughter-in-law) → снахи / снаси. Other native nouns in -ха retain the velar unchanged: утеха → утехи, стреха → стрехи.

2. Borrowings, Disciplines, and Foreign Toponyms:
• Integrated common loanwords: many fully assimilated feminine loanwords undergo sibilarization (фабрика → фабрици, апотека → апотеци, клиника → клиници), but a considerable number of common loanwords systematically keep the velar to preserve stem clarity, especially before consonant clusters or short roots: шминка → шминки, марка → марки, фока → фоки, клика → клики.
• Academic and scientific disciplines in -ика: nouns in -ика designating scientific and academic disciplines obligatorily undergo sibilarization: математика → математици, физика → физици, етика → етици, лингвистика → лингвистици. Unshifted forms (such as *математики) are ungrammatical in standard Serbian.
• Foreign geographical names: by general orthographic rule, foreign geographical names keep the velar unchanged to preserve root recognition: Волга → Волги, Осака → Осаки, Казабланка → Казабланки, Мајорка → Мајорки, Мека → Меки. A very small number of deeply rooted names undergo sibilarization as traditional historical exceptions: Африка → Африци, Америка → Америци.
• Resistance in foreign stems in -га and -ха: foreign loanwords in -га and -ха typically resist sibilarization to keep the root recognizable: лига → лиги, дрога → дроги, психа → психи, манга → манги, while loanwords like епоха admit both епохи and епоси.

3. Systematic Exceptions (Where the shift is blocked):
• Masculine nouns in -а: in masculine nouns ending in -a, sibilarization is systematically blocked to preserve root recognition and identity. This includes personal names (Лука → Луки, Никола → Николи), hypocoristics (дека → деки, чика → чики), and common nouns (ага → аги, колега → колеги). The only notable exceptions are владика → владици and the doublet слуга → слузи / слуги.
• Female personal names and hypocoristics: Бранка → Бранки, Анка → Анки, Олга → Олги, бака → баки, сека → секи.
• Female demonyms in -ка: Београђанка → Београђанки, Американка → Американки, Новосађанка → Новосађанки.
• Disyllabic nouns in -тка: патка → патки, тетка → тетки, четка → четки.
• Specific consonant clusters: clusters such as -чка-, -ћка-, -цка-, -зга-, and -сха- categorically prevent sibilarization: мачка → мачки, тачка → тачки, воћка → воћки, праћка → праћки, коцка → коцки, тезга → тезги, пасха → пасхи.

4. Permissible Doublets (Дублети) and Special Groups:
• Stems in -ха and specific native stems: while feminine нога strictly requires нози, снаха allows снахи / снаси, and loanwords like епоха allow епохи / епоси.
• Clusters with sonorants (-нка-, -лка-, -рка-): doublets are very common in words like банка → банци / банки, бајка → бајци / бајки, оловка → оловци / оловки. Note that native kinship terms like мајка strictly require мајци.
• Polysyllabic nouns in -тка / -етка / -итка: disyllables like битка allow doublets (бици / битки), and longer nouns permit parallel forms: приповетка → приповеци / приповетки, честитка → честици / честитки.

Examples (5)

  1. Држао је чашу у левој руци.

He held the glass in his left hand.

Word by Word: Held is glass in left hand.

Locative singular of 'рука' shifts 'к' to 'ц' before the ending '-и'.

  2. О тој књизи се много говорило у медијима.

That book was talked about a lot in the media.

Word by Word: About that book itself much talked in media.

Locative singular of 'књига' shifts 'г' to 'з' before the ending '-и'.

  3. Дао је поклон својој баки и сестри Јованки.

He gave a gift to his grandma and sister Jovanka.

Word by Word: Gave is gift his grandma and sister Jovanka.

Hypocoristic 'бака' yields 'баки' and proper name 'Јованка' yields 'Јованки', blocking sibilarization.

  4. Пришао је мачки на улици.

He approached the cat on the street.

Word by Word: Approached is cat on street.

The consonant cluster '-чк-' blocks sibilarization in 'мачка' → 'мачки'.

  5. Послао је писмо мајци након пута по Африци.

He sent a letter to his mother after traveling through Africa.

Word by Word: Sent is letter mother after journey through Africa.

Standard Serbian requires sibilarization in 'мајка' → 'мајци' and established geographic names like 'Африка' → 'Африци'.

Common Mistakes

  • Applying sibilarization to personal female names or hypocoristics.

Рекао сам то Бранци и баци.
Рекао сам то Бранки и баки.

Personal female names (Бранка → Бранки) and terms of endearment (бака → баки) block sibilarization. The form 'баци' is actually the imperative of the verb 'бацити' (throw!).

  • Failing to apply sibilarization to basic everyday feminine nouns.

    Пливали смо у тој реки.
    Пливали смо у тој реци.

In standard native nouns ending in a single velar consonant like 'река', 'рука', or 'књига', sibilarization is obligatory in the dative and locative.

  • Retaining intermediate unreduced consonant clusters like -тц-.

    Учествовао је у тој битци.
    Учествовао је у тој бици.

If sibilarization is applied to stems ending in -тк-, Serbian phonology requires the dental stop 'т' to drop before 'ц' (битка → бици). Alternatively, the unshifted doublet 'битки' is also standard.
